Dior Men's Pre-Fall 2023 Runway

Dior Men's Pre-Fall 2023 Runway

The Dior Men's Pre-Fall 2023 collection was staged with the Pyramids of Giza as its backdrop for its 75th year. The inspiration was Christian Dior's interest in astronomy, which was then connected to how the ancient Egyptians used stars to set the dates of religious festivals and position their pyramids and temples with the earth's four cardinal points. The outfits were also inspired by the film Dune and NASA and were heavily desert, post-apocalyptic and space themed. The androgynous looks featured skirts over trousers, desert boots, and a neutral colour palette with pops of yellow and orange. You can watch the complete collection below before we dive into some of the stand-out pieces.

The collection was all about the desert, androgyny and space travel. The piece in this image perfectly encapsulates the whole theme while still providing items like the trousers that wouldn't look out of place at a smart event or wedding. The sharply tailored, cool-toned blue trousers and matching pleated half-skirt evoke the desert's colours and the evening wear style. While the chunky boots, thick gloves and head-covering transparent jacket make one think of space and travelling in hostile environments and climates. The bright orange pop in the jumper under the jacket suggests a desert sunset.

Clothes following the themes above while still being suitable for evening wear, with a bit of tweaking of accessories, were visible throughout the collection. Look at the beautiful examples below.

Among the monochromatic cool-toned desert colours was the occasional pop of warm, bright yellow seen in this overcoat. The coat features notch lapels, hidden closures, and a loose, almost shapeless fit in line with the comfortable travelling theme of the show.

The touches of brilliant colour in the form of yellows and oranges continued on and off throughout the collection. This more relaxed outfit features an orange top with three-quarter-length sleeves and a high collar plunging into a deep v-neck. The top was elevated by its subtle vertical striped stitching detail on the body.

The collection showcased everything from evening wear to more relaxed everyday outfits. This top has short sleeves, a mandarin collar, and three-quarter buttons, and the zippered and buttoned pockets on the side seam give it a futuristic feel. The shorts suggest archaeological digs in Egypt, while the unusual patch pockets produce a relaxed and informal style.

The runway definitely followed a strong theme with its colours and styling. Although the looks ranged from suits to relaxed, casual outfits and more avant-garde examples, the inspiration behind the collection could be seen in every piece.
