This year, New York Fashion Week took place between the 9th and 14th of February. It takes place biannually in February and September, providing designers a platform to showcase their collections to a global audience. The schedule was packed with well-known designers, including Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Helmut Lang, Thom Browne, and Tommy Hilfiger.
Usually held at Spring Studios, 2024's fashion week had outgrown the venue and many official events were held at the Starrett-Lehigh Building on 11th Avenue and 26th Street. Although each designer had a clear theme for their collection, some trends spilt over from the spring/summer 24 runways, such as reds, whites, and blacks dominating the colour palette and suiting being a firm favourite. Other trends included massive shoulder pads, the 80s aesthetic, and singularly feminine touches to garments for both sexes, such as ruffles, ribbons, fabric flowers, and bows. The Victorian silhouette was also popular, as were styles from the 50s, 60s, and 90s.
Thom Browne closed New York Fashion Week on Valentine's Day. After a season away from the runway, his gothic collection, inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's 1845 poem The Raven, made a big splash. Take a look at the full runway show below.
Browne's pieces were all black and white to fit the gothic inspiration, with a splash of gold to close the show. Browne is famous for his structured tailoring, and he didn't disappoint with this collection. He mixed classic tailored garments with more fantasy-forward shapes, and following the poem's theme, some pieces were decorated with black raven motifs. Some silhouettes were long and sleek, some boxy, and some tightly cinched. There was an array of patterns, solids, and even sheer fabric, which, despite the overarching trend, Browne had yet to use before now. Let's take a look at some of the stand-out pieces.
