Tuesday 8th March 2022 marks the annual International Women's Day, this year focusing to #BreakTheBias. There have been many powerful women over the decades that have pushed boundaries, who have grown from strength to strength in their careers, and continue to be empowered as the battle for equality is still tackled in many areas. Today, we recognise just a few famous ladies from recent times on International Women's Day who inspire others everyday, taking on the the world in their individual, powerful and statement styles.
Victoria Magrath
Victoria Magrath - also known as Inthefrow - is a successful online creator who has transformed the Inthefrow name to be one of the most well-known in the fashion and beauty industry. A published author too through her book "The New Fashion Rules", her award-winning blog (launched in 2012) remains one of the leading blogs to this day, along with her other social media platforms where she creates beautiful content working with luxury brands, fully establishing herself as a leading and influential name in the industry.
Michelle Obama
Lawyer, author and Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has been such an iconic figure in the world and known for her truly inspiring speeches. Wife of the Former President of the United States, Barack Obama, Michelle has fought for the education of girls across the world and used her platform to tackle issues such as poverty too. Her book, "Becoming", became a massive hit internationally as she relayed her life through to becoming the First Lady, whilst delivering some key messages that will forever inspire and pave the way for young girls and their futures.
Katie Piper
Writer, TV presenter and activist Katie Piper was awarded an OBE earlier this year for her services to charity and those who are victims of burns. In 2008, Katie was a victim of an acid attack and the following year in 2009, established her own foundation called The Katie Piper Foundation. Her foundation aims to help those who need rehabilitation and aid during their recovery from burns. She continues to be inspiring and her foundation has helped countless amount of people across the years.
Kanya King
Kanya King was awarded a CBE for her services to music, culture and entrepreneurship in 2019 and is well known for being the founder of the MOBO Awards. The MOBOs (Music of Black Origin) recognise artists in the music fields such as rap, R'n'B, and grime - and Kanya King launched the first ever MOBO Awards in 1996. Since then, the awards have occurred annually with artists such as Stormzy being recognised for their talents at the MOBOs, artists who have been recognised around the world. It was a truly pivotal moment which Kanya King made happen which was a massive step forwards in the music industry.
Sara Davies
Sara Davies MBE was awarded the honour back in 2016 for her services to the economy and is well-known for being one of the investing dragons on the BBC show, "Dragons Den". The businesswoman founded her company Crafter's Companion whilst at university in 2005 and since then, has grown into a huge company supplying many craft products, which develop people's creative interests and light that creative spark. Her knowledge in business has led her to become a role figure in providing guidance to women looking to start their own enterprises.
Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham OBE (awarded in 2017 for her services to fashion) is a former singer, famous for being in the Spice Girls; but, in recent years, has firmly established her name in the fashion industry with her Victoria Beckham line. First established in 2008, her unique label has grown since then with her collections spotted quite regularly and showcased during fashion months, whilst later in 2019, Victoria Beckham Beauty was launched, becoming a staple in the beauty industry also.
Rihanna
Rihanna is a singer, actress, businesswoman and fashion designer whose determination and success has established her as one of the most successful women in the world. Her singing career first started in 2003 and has launched a few business ventures since then, including becoming a co-owner of the music service Tidal; but, the brand famous for associated with Rihanna is Fenty. Fenty is the singer's surname and since 2019, has been the provider of clothing and footwear, along with Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty and Fenty Skin taking the world by storm.
These are just a small handful of the many women who continue to empower and inspire those around. The successes and achievements of women, however big or small, should be recognised and we encourage you to shout out the women in your life who are a role model for you, who are a key figure in your life, and who inspire you!
