Thomas Shelby, patriarch of the Shelby family, known to some as Tommy, head of the Peaky Blinders and serious businessman.
Played by Cillian Murphy, Thomas Shelby has been the head of the "Peaky Blinders" and the head of the Shelby family. A solider during World War One, his experience carried on with him, experiencing nightmares and despite the tough exterior, lets his emotions win on a few occasions. Nevertheless, he stands aground with determination to grow Shelby Company Ltd, taking the establishment to New York, and ensures his family are safe. His love for Grace was strong and along the way, Tommy's made sacrifices; yet his quick thinking and plans have helped him win on many occasions. The confidence and leadership is most evident through his actions; but also his tailored attire. Selecting 3 outfits from Thomas Shelby's wardrobe is tough, with such a vast range to choose from; but here are our top 3.
One of the most iconic shots of who we would come to know as Thomas Shelby, head of the "Peaky Blinders" in series 1. The stance is enough to show the leadership of Tommy to others whilst wearing a well-tailored suit. Sitting on his black horse called Monaghan Boy. The suit is a dark grey three-piece tweed number, worn with the signature tweed flat cap of the gang and accessorised with his gold pocket watch chain on the waistcoat. The notch lapels are short for his day-to-day suit of choice, the bottom waistcoat button left undone and the shoulders rounded on the jacket to symbolise his power and clever thinking. The shirt is a white and blue striped design with a detachable round collar, no tie worn; but a tie isn't needed.
Series 2 is where we saw more of what we know as the true, signature, statement "Peaky Blinders" look: the long overcoat and tweed peaked cap combination. This is one of the many styles Tommy has worn, styled without a tie once more; but not misplacing his gold waistcoat pocket watch. The speckled tweed three-piece suit is worn underneath his black overcoat with wide peak lapels and the contrasting velvet collar. The waistcoat features a high angled notch on the hem and the trousers are pleated to create extra fullness and comfort for the daily suit. The coat is lined in a deep red or burgundy, quite symbolic for the Peaky Blinders' leading man.
Thomas Shelby: "I don’t pay for suits. My suits are on the house or the house burns down."
A wealthy and serious businessman like Thomas Shelby, head of Shelby Company Limited, is bound to have a good range of well-presented suits that are suitable for attending meets and for the day-to-day running. Of course he does, and this example from series 5 is just one of many. It's a dark navy blue windowpane check made in a three-piece attire and styled with a crisp white shirt. The top of the matching pocket square can be seen in the welt pocket of the blazer, the shirt cuffs showing slightly and the signature gold waistcoat pocket watch chain for all to see. The tie is a blue striped design secured in-between the classic collar and held in place with a silver tie clip. Four welt pockets are sewn into the waistcoat as the blazer includes wide peak lapels and a two-button front.
It really is impossible to just choose one suit of Thomas Shelby's that was very strong, so below are just a few more attires we can associate well with the businessman and head of the Peaky Blinders. What does the final series have in store for Tommy?
