The Fashion of "Bridgerton": What To Expect From Season 2

That's right! In just two months, the highly anticipated season 2 of "Bridgerton" returns to our Netflix screens on 25th March 2022. Let's take a look at who will be returning to season 2...

In season 1, we followed the love story of Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings, with other story-lines also the focus (including the mystery of Lady Whistledown's secret identity). From what we've seen so far, it looks like Daphne (played by Phoebe Dynevor) will be returning to our screens once more, alongside the Featheringtons and their flamboyant fashion in season 1.

Based on the second book in the Julia Quinn series, "The Viscount Who Loved Me", this series will closely follow Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathan Bailey) and a new love interest of his: Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley). Along with the plot lines keeping us hooked, so too will the Regency-inspired costumes that dazzled us from the very beginning. Over 7500 costumes were involved in season 1 alone from costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, so we can only expect more grandeur and character from season 2 and of course, some inspirational pieces of tailoring. In the words of Lady Whistledown, "dearest readers", let's delve into the world of "Bridgerton" and what we can expect on the 25th March 2022...

In this first look released on Netflix's YouTube channel, we see Anthony talking to Kate outside during one of the many Ton's balls. Here, Kate is wearing a stunning Empire waist gown, either made from an ice blue or silver floral gown that is glistening with embroidery across the waist and lace detailing. The neckline is square with cap sleeves in this elegant silhouette as the dress falls gracefully to the floor from the waist. Anthony's classic tailcoat fashion continues in season 2 as in this scene, he's wearing a dark (either blue or black) tailcoat with four buttons on the double-breasted front. Underneath is a grey double-breasted waistcoat with a geometric pattern print, sitting just higher than the jacket neckline and finishing with a cream shirt and cravat in a bow tie.

The Sharma sisters are the newest characters to the Ton and bring with them their own individual styles as seen above: Edwina Sharma on the right (played by Charithra Chandran) wearing a delicate light pink Empire-line gown with floaty cap sleeves and subtle embroidery to blend in naturally to the layers included in the gown. By stark contrast, Kate Sharma is wearing a teal satin or silk gown underneath a structured jacket with gathered shoulders and a dark blue stand-up collar. The notch lapels are finished with smooth curves to complement the shimmery appearance of the outfit, reflecting the wealth of the family.

If the costumes in this scene itself weren't strong enough, the positioning of the characters are. It's clear that Kate is going to be one of the main characters this season; but this certainly certifies how much of an impact she will have. She is pictured here wearing a teal or turquoise blend costume consisting of a long overcoat or dress, with the top half conveying strong tailoring features. Notch lapels are implied and a lighter blue embellishment outlining the scooped neckline and collar, the shoulders gathered for a distinctive silhouette. The top hat with its curved brim and decorative bow is also a strong finishing top. You can also see in the background Anthony, Benedict (played by Luke Thompson) and another gentlemen wearing a variety of long overcoats, double-breasted in shape and military in style.

As we can see, Daphne is back for season 2 and in this scene with her brother Anthony, she wears a neutral gown in the Regency silhouette with the signature Empire waist and cap sleeves, soft shoulders and the chiffon layer of the dress finished with delicate floral embroidery. Anthony's waistcoat of choice appears to be cut from a printed cloth that is a blue/black colour, whilst the shirt sleeves are loose fitting. The collars are a wide shawl design, overlapping to create the signature high neckline that has a matching (or similar) cravat neckpiece tucked into the garment.

We shall expect to see the Bridgerton brothers of Anthony, Benedict and Colin (pictured on the left played by Luke Newton) reunited together and, from the looks of it, take part in a bit of friendly fencing outside. Anthony is wearing a cream padded vest over the top with a small band collar and underneath, a loose white shirt which all three brothers appear to wear too. They also appear to wear tan breeches either tucked into the socks or cropped to below the knees, with Colin and Benedict wearing supportive brown bands across the waist.

Nicola Coughlan is back as Penelope Featherington in season 2 and her style was one that was vibrant and flamboyant during the first season, as per the family's style; but here, her yellow gown is subtle and soft through its pastel hue. White flowers cover the entire gown with the signature Empire waist and her cap sleeves, whilst her best friend Eloise Bridgerton (played by Claudia Jessie) matches the softness of the costumes in this scene through her pastel green dress. The first series, Eloise was one for wearing elements of tailoring in her gown and she does so here through the touches of notch lapels on the top and a buttoned front. The cap sleeves are an element to notice too with the pleated design to add extra shape and height to the shoulder line.

The costumes are already looking to be even more grand, extravagant and glistening than the first season of "Bridgerton", and we cannot wait to see what other gems are awaiting us when the 25th March 2022 arrives!
