Daniel Craig's Style as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery - A Hand Tailored Suit

Daniel Craig's Style as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the 2022 standalone Netflix sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, it once again stars Daniel Craig as the quirky southern detective Benoit Blanc. Blanc is caught up in a new case involving tech billionaire Miles Bron and his closest friends. A fabulous ensemble cast includes Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. The costumes for each character are beautifully curated by Jenny Eagan and perfectly fit their differing personalities. Today we will focus on Blanc's looks.

Benoit's Arrival

Set on a Greek island, it is evident from Blanc's outfit when he first arrives that there is something old-fashioned and dandified about him. He's obviously dressing to fit in with the wealthy vacationers among whom he's been thrust. In this scene, he wears high-waisted cream-coloured trousers with antiquated pleats and buckles to tighten the waist. He's clutching the matching jacket, showing off his pink shirt with its cocktail cuffs and a light blue ascot rather than a tie, giving the outfit a definite relaxed holiday vibe.

In the first film, flowered ties were a theme. In this movie, ascots play a prominent role, with Blanc having a variety to accompany the linen shirts he sports throughout.

The Safari Suit

Here Craig's character wears a linen safari-style suit popular in the sixties and seventies. It has deep pleats on the trousers, and the jacket features patch pockets, an inset box pleat, button-down flaps, and short-notch lapels. It is paired with the ubiquitous ascot, this time in a patterned pale pink, and a blue linen shirt again with cocktail cuffs.

The Striped Sweater

Going farther back in time to the 1950s, this black and white striped thin sweater and peach ascot are reminiscent of Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief. The cut of the white linen trousers and their high-waist shouts Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra in On the Town.

That Swim Suit

The stand-out piece for us at A Hand Tailored Suit was the bathing suit! Blanc seems to be wearing a blue and white striped deckchair with a yellow neckerchief! It is evocative of a 1960s loungewear set, again fitting with his old-fashioned, slightly eccentric, dandified looks present throughout the whole film.

Benoit at Home

Finally, we see Blanc at home when he meets Janelle Monáe's character. He appears relaxed in his home in a maroon and blue striped housecoat. However, if you look closely, you can see he's already dressed underneath in a blue and white striped shirt and one of his iconic floral ties from the first film. According to Netflix, Craig said that that is part of Blanc's psychology. As a detective, he needs to be "prepared and armoured and ready to go".
