We've written two blog posts covering the first six episodes of Netflix's new fantasy television series (with eight episodes total), Shadow and Bone. We recommend that you read those two blog posts if you haven't already as we don't want to spoil the excitement for you.
The show is based on the Grisha novel trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. The three novels in the trilogy are Shadow and Bone (from which the television show's name derives), Siege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising. The costumes and sets on the show are spectacular and the designs are based on 18th and 19th-century Russian garments with a few Victorian-era garments and other inspirations along the way. Let's take a look at some of the characters and their costumes on the show.

Be sure to check out the trailer if you haven't watched the show already. We'd recommend watching all eight episodes before reading these blog posts as they may contain spoilers.
Episodes 7-8 Recap
In episode 7, Mal and Alina find the stag, but Alina shares an understanding with the stag and chooses not to kill it but Kirigan shows up, injuring Mal and killing the stag. He has parts of the stag antlers fused into Alina's collarbone and into his hand, demonstrating to Alina that he can now control her power and he plans to take her to the Fold. She refuses but Kirigan says he will heal Mal if she complies.
Genya reunites with Alina to get her ready for an event and she realises the Genya is in league with Kirigan and kept the letters from Mal away from her; she notes that she didn't have a choice but to follow Kirigan but Alina feels betrayed.
Kirigan plans to take nobles across the Fold to demonstrate his and Alina's new power.
The Crows (Kaz, Inej, and Jesper) find their way onto the ship since they cannot return through the fold on the train they arrived on with Arken since it was blown up.
Nina and Matthias reach a city after their ordeal through the tundra and rest in an Inn. Fedyor finds them and slows Matthias' heart with his powers and tries to take Nina back to East Ravka. To escape Fedyor, she declares Matthias is a slaver so that the townspeople will arrest him. Matthias, when he wakes imprisoned on a ship, thinks Nina betrayed him.
The ship moves through the Fold and Alina shields the passengers with a light tunnel to stop Volcra attacks. When they almost reach the other side, Kirigan expands the fold towards West Ravka with the intention to use the Fold to make sure all bow to his power and free the Grisha from persecution.
The Crows find Mal on board as a stowaway. Mal holds Kirigan at gunpoint and the Crows advance to attack. Zoya, a Grisha who dislikes Alina, turns on Kirigan (since she has relatives who live in West Ravka) and steers the ship across the Fold, against Kirigan's wishes.
Alina cuts the stag antler from Kirigan's hand using Inej's dagger, breaking his control over her but she's stopped by Kirigan's heartrender before Jesper shoots him. Kirigan and Mal fight outside the ship and it appears Kirigan is killed by the Volcra.
Zoya, Alina, Mal, Kaz, Inej, and Jesper leave the Fold as the only survivors. They decide to part ways. The Crows meet Nina on a skiff heading back to Ketterdam. Alina and Mal are on the skiff, planning to go in a different direction.
At the fold, Kirigan emerges, wounded, yet summoning the Fold and a shadow army to follow in his wake.
General Kirigan
In episode 7, you get more of a backstory on Kirigan and how he created the fold. His clothes are still black and he has longer hair but the fastenings on his coat are buttons and embroidery and not elaborate brass and gold fastenings.
When Kirigan is forcing Alina to combine powers, they both wear fur collars on their wool cape-like coats. He has her dress in a simple almost Regency-era cut black dress (but with a more Tudor neckline) for their final show with an antler pattern at the neck.
The Crows
The Crows wear more Victorian-style gangster clothing and Inej wars Ninja-style clothing.
Mal and Alina
Mal and Alina have traded their previous military dress for vagrant-style warm clothing, which demonstrates their journey outside the confines of their previous roles.
The Final Scenes
Each character emerges worse for wear in the final scenes. What will happen in Series 2! We can't wait to find out.
