CFDA Fashion Awards 2022: Gents of the Red Carpet - A Hand Tailored Suit

CFDA Fashion Awards 2022: Gents of the Red Carpet

The annual CFDA Fashion Awards took place on the 7th November 2022) at the venue of Cipriani South Street in New York, where many big names in fashion attended. The awards see those in fashion honoured in categories such as American Accessories Designer, Fashion Icon Award and American Emerging Designer. Of course, with it being a fashion awards, we could only expect the looks to be outstanding and certainly eye-catching, and below are just a few of the gentlemen's attires that caught our eye.

Jaden Smith

Actor and rapper Jaden Smith was one in attendance donning a Thom Browne textured tailored ensemble at this year's CFDA Fashion Awards. It was a three-piece suit with the jacket created with short notch lapels and a high button placement on the front, contrasting jet pockets near the bottom and a welt pocket accessorised with a crisp white pocket square. The light, textured fabric would be below the jacket hem with subtle parts hanging down to showcase delicate nature of it. Underneath, a single-breasted waistcoat with bound edges was worn, all five buttons fastened and sitting high on the chest over the white evening shirt. These cuffs would fully cover the hands for that edgy feel to the attire, completed with a small black bow tie around the neck and the trousers straight-leg in cut.

Jesse Williams

Also sporting Thom Browne was actor Jesse Williams, whose ensemble featured a pair of black tailored shorts and waistcoat worn under a sharp camel trench coat. The coat itself was constructed with wide notch lapels and collar with the shoulder epaulettes echoing the black binding that's seen throughout the garment. A tall double vent was on the back - again outlined in black binding - with the storm flap made distinctive too through this finishing. The sleeve belts were also defined on this double-breasted piece, as the waistcoat was half fastened for this more casual approach. The white shirt underneath was left unfastened at the top with a black tie kept in place with the silver tie clip and tucked into the shorts themselves.

Lenny Kravitz

Singer/songwriter Lenny Kravitz rocked up to the event wearing a look from LaQuan Smith as he accepted the Fashion Icon Award. The look featured a feather-decorated black blazer with a pair of leather trousers to contrast the various textures involved in the attire. With subtle cut-out sections on the blazer itself, it would be a double-breasted front with two buttons and the lapels leading low down on the body. The cuffs were finished with smaller matching buttons for that classic finish, whilst the feathers in this edgy evening look were decorating the neckline and hanging down the sides.

 Wes Gordon

Creative director of Carolina Herrera, Wes Gordon, was spotted at the event also looking ready for the evening in a classic shawl lapel evening jacket with slim black trousers. Underneath the jacket was a white shirt worn open collar to showcase the fun of an evening suit, whilst the lapel would shine in a subtle way thanks to the contrast satin finish. One button would fasten the jacket together with jet pockets near the bottom, whilst the trousers were cropped to the ankle and kept sharp thanks to the centre front crease and the contrast satin side stripe it includes.

LaQuan Smith

Fashion designer LaQuan Smith's look of the night was very cool and stylish, donning an all-grey ensemble that included a two-piece suit and grey shirt. The jacket itself was cut with wide peak lapels and in a double-breasted form, looking even more tailored and structured left unfastened. The shoulders were softly padded with flapped pockets included in the construction, contrasting the grey scarf that was wrapped around the neck and draping down the front to match the shirt. The designer's trousers would capture the coolness of the look even more thanks to the wide flared hems and its floor-length finish. With side pockets, a subtle centre crease spotted and classic waistband, it was one of the dapper, stylish looks of the night.

 Whitney Robinson

Capturing Autumn in their attire was entrepreneur Whitney Robinson, donning a three-piece mustard suede or cord Polo Ralph Lauren piece. Wearing their shirt with the collar unfastened, this creates a bold line across the neck which is enhanced through the tailored line across the shoulders. The jacket collar is elongated on the one side as notch lapels were the style of choice in this piece, a welt and flapped pockets included int he design. The waistcoat was single-breasted with five buttons on the front and the bottom left unfastened, as is a stylish rule with waistcoats. With welt pockets and no lapel on the neckline, it would allow the vividness of the colour to stand out further. The trousers would include side pockets and be styled quite casually through the slim-line silhouette and flat front: a more casual three-piece suit that's very dapper and fashionable.

Moses Sumney

Wearing another stand-out suit of the night at the fashion awards was singer/songwriter Moses Sumney, wearing a black suiting ensemble from WILLY CHAVARRIA. A detail that is noticed straightaway is the enlarged fabric flower that sits in place where a flower would be worn on the lapel. Along with the flower, the trousers are again another talking point of the outfit, thanks to the very oversized and wide-leg cut they were constructed with, not forgetting to notice the pleated front and the perfect floor-length finishing of the hem. The jacket itself was designed with wide peak lapels whose height reached almost over the shoulders, styled well in this double-breasted piece with a modern three-button front. The fourth button could be seen placed far to the side as the flapped pockets were sitting level on the waist, the jets matching the finish of the trousers.

 Wisdom Kaye

Looking groovy and retro was model Wisdom Kaye, wearing a stunning teal blue two-piece suit whose shoulders were delivering in height and suave indeed. The peak lapels were very sharp as the dapper model was himself, with a welt pocket left as is on the chest pocket and the double jet pockets sitting just below the waist. The one-button front sat level with the waist to create a tall notch and a longer line in the body, whilst the trousers sat high-waisted to enhance the elongated silhouette of the attire overall. The trousers were slim with a centre crease on the front and the hem sitting over the boots nicely. Underneath the jacket was a vintage floral designed shirt that was beige in colour; yet paired well with similar shades of blue seen in the pattern. For a modern finish, his red velvet bow tie was styled to the side, again this shade of red a great choice to pick out that in the shirt itself for his fashion awards attire.
