Olympic Swimmer Matthew Richards Wears A Hand Tailored Suit to Wimbledon!
With Wimbledon in full swing, we had the honour to dress one of our VIP clients, Olympic swimming champion Matthew Richards, for his attendance in the Royal Box on Sunday, 6th July. British swimmer Matthew, who has been competing internationally since 2020, won gold in the 4 x 200-metre freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, gold in the 200-metre freestyle at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, and silver in the 200-metre freestyle at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Bearing this in mind, buying off-the-peg suits can be very difficult for someone with an athletic physique. We had the pleasure and privilege of creating a one-of-a-kind, bespoke, hand-tailored suit to fit him perfectly. Firstly, he selected his suit material, opting for a navy blue Australian wool fabric woven in Italy.
Next, Richards chose the fabric for his tie and matching pocket square, selecting a gorgeous birdseye burgundy wool.
Then came the construction of the suit. Richards picked a single-breasted suit with a slim fit in both the jacket and the trousers. The jacket featured three-and-a-half-inch peaked lapels, double vents, slanted flap pockets, sloping shoulders, and four navy-coloured cuff buttons. For extra pizzazz and personalisation, we finished the bottom cuff buttonhole in burgundy thread and embroidered "Richards" in gold underneath the collar.
The trousers were slim-fitting and straight-cut, featuring cross pockets—a type of pocket opening that angles downwards and is a sportier alternative to the traditional side seam pocket, as they are easier to access while standing. They are an unusual choice for a suit, usually found in casual trousers, but they add a unique and distinctive look to formal wear. To complete his outfit, Matthew Richards chose a light blue shirt with a spread collar and "MR" embroidered in a matching coloured thread on the left corner of the cuffs, along with a two-and-a-half-inch tie in the beautiful burgundy birdseye material mentioned above.
