Emmys Fashions: Best Dressed Men at the 71st Primetime Emmys

The Emmy Awards recognise excellence in television and is an American award ceremony hosted each year in LA. There are several Emmy ceremonies, including the Primetime and Daytime Emmys. This year the ceremony took place on the 22 September at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and was broadcast in the US by Fox. For the fourth time in its history, the show did not have a host. After the Oscars, the Emmys are the most prestigious Hollywood award. Let’s take a look at the Emmys fashions, the best-dressed men at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bill Hader

Known for his roles on SNL and Barry, Bill Hader has been on the comedy scene since the late 90s with roles in Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Adventureland, Trainwreck, Finding Droy, and Men in Black 3.  At the Emmys this year, Bill won the award for ‘Lead Actor in Comedy Series’. He was nominated for ‘Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series’ which he lost to Phoebe Waller-Bridge and ‘Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series’ which he lost to Harry Bradbeer who worked on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s show Fleabag. 

Bill wore a classically cut black tux with contrasting silk pointed lapels.

Ben Whishaw 

English actor Ben Whishaw attended RADA is known for many roles including in Paddington, Mary Poppins Returns, The Danish Girl, and A Very English Scandal. Ben won the Emmy for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie’ for the latter. 

Ben wore his usually longer hair closely cropped and opted for a smart black suit instead of a tux. He wore pointed contrasting silk lapels and a black tie with a logo.

Jharrel Jerome

Young actor Jharrel Jerome is known for his role in Moonlight, When They See Us, and Mr. Mercedes. Jharrel won the Emmy for ‘Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie’ for the Netflix show When They See Us. 

Jharrel wore a suave grey two-piece classic tux with notched lapels with a stripe detail down the leg. He opted for a white shirt and white tie.

John Oliver

English comedian, writer, and producer John Oliver is known for hosting  Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a satirical news show on HBO. He got his start on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as Senior British Correspondent, later guest hosting the show when Stewart was directing Rosewater. At the Emmys, he won an award for ‘Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series’ and ‘Outstanding Variety Talk Series.’ He didn’t win ‘Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series’ but he was nominated. 

John wore a classically cut black suit with contrasting silk lapels (very popular this year). He wore a black button-up shirt and black tie to finish off his monochromatic look. 

Peter Dinklage

American actor Peter Dinklage is known for many roles including his breakthrough role in The Station Agent, UnderdogDeath at a FuneralPenelopeThe Chronicles of Narnia: Prince CaspianX-Men: Days of Future Past, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri as well as Game of Thrones. Peter won an Emmy for his role in Game of Thrones for ‘Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series’.

Peter wore a classic black three-piece suit with contrasting silk lapels. He opted for a crisp white shirt and a black tie.

Jason Bateman

Actor Jason Bateman is known for many roles including his part in Arrested Development, The Break-UpJunoHancockUp in the AirCouples RetreatThe SwitchHorrible BossesThe GiftOffice Christmas PartyZootopia, Game Night, and most recently for Ozark. Jason won an Emmy for ‘Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series’ and was nominated for ‘Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ but lost to Billy Porter.

At the Emmys, he wore a classically cut navy tux with contrasting silk lapels and a black bow tie.

Stellan Skarsgård

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård is known for several roles including The Hunt for Red October, Professor Gerald Lambeau in Good Will Hunting, Bootstrap Bill Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Bill Anderson in Mamma Mia! and the sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Martin Vanger in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Dr. Erik Selvig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Grand Duke in Cinderella, and Boris Shcherbina in the HBO/Sky UK television miniseries Chernobyl. For his role in Chernobyl, he was nominated for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.’

He wore a classic black tux with a cummerbund, a white tuxedo shirt, and a black bow tie alongside fellow actor Jared Harris who was nominated for ‘Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.’ Jared wore a light-grey variation on a tux with a contrasting stripe down the leg and a fun lapel pin.
