London Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Burberry - A Hand Tailored Suit

London Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Burberry

The London Fashion Week extravaganza took place this year between the 15th and 19th of September. Most designers host their shows at various secret locations throughout the city, but the main headquarters for the week was 180 The Strand and Somerset House.

Burberry's latest runway offering, Spring/Summer 24, by Daniel Lee as creative officer of the brand, took place in a large checked tent in Highbury Field, north London. The brand is famous for its classic trench coat, and Lee leaned into the signature product, reinventing it in many styles - sleeveless, cropped, and a bomber-trench hybrid. He also used bright blue as his trademark colour throughout the collection, calling it 'Knight Blue' in homage to Burberry's Equestrian Knight logo. Florals and checks were also in evidence on the catwalk, and accessories, such as oversized belts, handbags, and sparkly clutches, were ubiquitous.

Take a look at the full runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.

Outfit #1

Here, you can see the reinvention of Burberry's classic trench coat. It is gunmetal grey, falls just below the knee, has long sleeves, is double-breasted, and has military-style epaulettes. All of the usual features are included, but if you look closer, a zip goes around the entire garment at hip height, allowing it to be turned into an edgy bomber jacket with an exciting zipper tooth hem.

Outfit #2

This look shows off classic tailoring in a beautiful striped charcoal colour. The formal double-breasted jacket has padded shoulders, subtly peaked lapels, straight jetted pockets, and a ticket pocket for added interest. The trousers are loosely cut and slouchy; the look is shown being worn without a shirt, and it is accessorised with a chain-handled cross-body bag, giving the suit a more contemporary feel.

Outfit #3

This outfit takes you straight back to the early 2000s with its incredibly low-rise trousers and jean-style jacket. The matching cream-coloured set is embellished with raised cream florals and paired with another 2000s classic, the handkerchief top. The top is patterned with strawberries in the signature Knight Blue colour. The look was finished with cream sandals and a mismatched grey underarm bag.

Outfit #4

Short suits were all over runways back in June and made an appearance at New York Fashion Week last week. Burberry jumped on the bandwagon with their own version. This set has an oversized navy blue shirt left open at the collar and cuffs for a relaxed off-duty feel. The shirt was tucked into loose-fitting tailored shorts with a drawstring waistband, unusual for bespoke trousers but making them extra comfortable.

Outfit #5

Finally, the men were not deprived of a reworked trademark trench coat. The black double-breasted below-the-knee coat had the standard long sleeves, epaulettes, and matching, almost invisible buttons. However, a wide belt was added at hip height, giving a different silhouette to the usual waist-cinching belt look.
