London Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Molly Goddard
Share
The London Fashion Week extravaganza took place this year between the 15th and 19th of September. Most designers host their shows at various secret locations throughout the city, but the main headquarters for the week was 180 The Strand and Somerset House.
Molly Goddard's Spring/Summer 24 show had her signature frills and flounce, but in this collection, they peaked out from underneath, showing the traditional underpinnings of the garments on the outside. Vintage silhouettes, Georgian underskirts, and Victorian christening gowns inspired the collection and were influenced by the structure of vintage clothes seen at the National Theatre's costume hire. The colour palette was very neutral, with floral prints and pastels scattered throughout, all amongst a black base.
Take a look at the runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.
Outfit #1
This sheer yellow puff-sleeved dress has a chemise-like form, showing off a ruffled crinoline-shaped petticoat underneath and exposed faux-boning around the waist, hips, and breasts. It doesn't have an exact historical period shape but does give the impression of long-ago underwear and whimsy, especially because it is paired with a silver princess-like flat.
Outfit #2
This ensemble also has a historical shape, this time more of an early Edwardian form in the white ruffled, almost quilted-looking petticoat that skims the waist and hips but flares dramatically at the knee. The white upper garment is corset-reminiscent but modernised with its simplicity and truncated length.
Outfit #3
A beautiful muted lilac shade is used on the 1950s style draped cardigan with satin ruffled edging that matches the ruffled and pleated black bandeau bra. The peachy tulle skirt also has a 1950s underskirt vibe.
Outfit #4
These checked jean jackets and wide-legged denim trousers were more modern and paired with a chunky knit lilac v-necked jumper. However, they were still on theme with the inside-out and vintage look, featuring exposed raw and fraying seams and deliberately faded fabric.
Outfit #5
Finally, this dress had an underwear and outerwear combined vibe with a plain white matt slip-looking bodice attached to a gathered, poufy, shiny black silk satin skirt.
