London Fashion Week. Day One, 9th June 2023: Justin Cassin

London Fashion Week is back!

London Fashion Week this year is taking place between the 9th-12th June and 15th-19th September 2023. It will showcase womenswear and menswear as a combined digital and physical event. The June programme will feature both established designers and the class of 2023 fashion graduates, focussing on their graduate collections. London Fashion Week kicked off day one with shows from Qasimi Rising, presenting new designers Omer Asim and Salim Azzam, and established brands, J&M Davidson and Justin Cassin. Here at A Hand Tailored Suit, we cast our sartorial eye over the Justin Cassin Autumn/Winter 24 runway. Let's find out a little about Justin Cassin's brand and take a look at some of the outfits on display.

Justin Cassin

The international designer is originally from Los Angeles and concentrates on menswear designs. According to Icon Magazine, Cassin wants to "blur the lines between traditional and contemporary fashion". His brand blends streetwear with formalwear to create "not-so-basic basics" for men.

The collection flowed seamlessly together, featuring basic neutrals like black, white, grey, and beige with pops of colour in shades of green and pink. All the looks were relaxed, with tailored items peppered throughout to elevate the ensembles from purely casual to business appropriate. Let's take a look at some of the stand-out pieces.

This stylish look features loose-fitting grey trousers with slouchy gathered fabric at the ankles and a covered closure at the waist (common on all of the trousers in the collection), giving it a relaxed and casual feel but with beautifully tailored finishes. The jacket is a lovely nude beige with subtle vertical stripes, flap pockets, natural shoulders, and incredibly wide-notch lapels. The two pieces make for a casual but smart look. Individually, the trousers paired with a T-shirt would make an elegant, relaxed outfit. The jacket combined with a shirt and slim-fitting trousers would definitely be suitable for an informal business occasion.

Following a similar aesthetic as the previous look, this outfit also features loose-fitting slouchy grey trousers, this time paired with a more evening-appropriate jacket in a darker grey with a longer hem-line, one-button closure, slimmer notch lapels, and structured padded shoulders. Beautiful top stitching around the collar and lapels create a refined finishing touch.

This next look is a two-piece set in black silk satin. Again, the trousers are the signature slouchy design of this collection, but with all of the luxurious finishing details. The shirt has long sleeves with a traditional cuff and a deep v-collar, which, when buttoned, would show off a hint of chest. This set takes loungewear to the next level.

This outfit continued the streetwear look with tighter-fitting tailored black trousers combined with a pop of colour in the form of an acid-green puffer jacket. Just because the ensemble was more casual didn't mean that there had been a lack of attention to detail. The coat was of a cropped silhouette, a popular length at the moment, and it sported both zipper and button closures for added interest and dimension.

The end of the show circled back to a combination of casual and smart pieces. This look combines a base of the signature slouchy silhouetted trousers in cream with a matching coloured long-sleeved shirt with a polo-shirt style collar. Over the top was a more formal tweed-like double-breasted jacket. Instead of the usual buttons, the jacket had an innovative asymmetrical bar and loop side closure in black that matched the black of the two-toned collar and notch lapels. Traditional jetted pockets were added to enhance the jacket's formality but placed slightly higher than usual to continue the original feel of the look.
