London Fashion Week. Day Two, 10th June 2023: Ravensbourne University London

London Fashion Week this year is taking place between the 9th-12th June and 15th-19th September 2023. It will showcase womenswear and menswear as a combined digital and physical event. The June programme will feature both established designers and the class of 2023 fashion graduates, focussing on their graduate collections.

Day two of the event concentrated on the graduate collections from Ravensbourne University London. Ravensbourne has a big reputation among designers, producing graduates who have gone on to work for famous brands, such as Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Chloe, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Oscar De La Renta, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham. The students practice both traditional and brand-new techniques in design, pattern cutting, and sampling. This runway is more about showing off the student's art, creativity and flair rather than wearability.

Let's look at some of the standout pieces from the graduate collection.

This designer chose the unusual material rope to feature throughout their collection. They used it to create easily recognisable silhouettes that are effortless to imagine wearing while appreciating the artistry and skill in the unique material choice.

Highly textured wool was used in these designs to create a modern twist on a traditional material with bold shapes and beautiful finishes.

Jenna Ortega, the star of Netflix's Wednesday, was seen on the Jimmy Fallon Show wearing a blazer with tacking, pad stitches and raw edges. These looks follow a similar theme, with the construction elements of the garments being left in to give a peek behind the creative process of making clothing. At the same time, it still looks intentional and integral to the attire's design.

These looks were incredibly futuristic, giving post-apocalyptic fashion vibes with strange body and head cages, androgynous silhouettes, and distressed materials.

Finally, these designs were more wearable with traditional shapes, colours and silk satin material. However, the designer's individuality still shone through with their use of intriguing, gathered and structured elements.
