New York Fashion Week 2024: The Michael Kors Runway

This year, New York Fashion Week took place between the 9th and 14th of February. It takes place biannually in February and September, providing designers a platform to showcase their collections to a global audience. The schedule was packed with well-known designers, including Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Helmut Lang, Thom Browne, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Usually held at Spring Studios, 2024's fashion week had outgrown the venue and many official events were held at the Starrett-Lehigh Building on 11th Avenue and 26th Street. Although each designer had a clear theme for their collection, some trends spilt over from the spring/summer 24 runways, such as reds, whites, and blacks dominating the colour palette and suiting being a firm favourite. Other trends included massive shoulder pads, the 80s aesthetic, and singularly feminine touches to garments for both sexes, such as ruffles, ribbons, fabric flowers, and bows. The Victorian silhouette was also popular, as were styles from the 50s, 60s, and 90s.

Michael Kors staged his Fall/Winter 24 show in Barneys' original Seventh Avenue and 17th Street location, which is now empty. He sold his first collection there, and this collection was full of nostalgia. Watch the entire runway show below.

Kors' theme was power glamour and power tailoring from the 1930s, inspired by his grandmother's '30s wedding gown and stars of the silver screen, such as Katherine Hepburn and Jean Harlow. The collection consisted of sculptural jackets, pencil skirts, trouser skirts, white shirts, tank tops, and slouchy trousers. The materials used included luxurious cashmere, faux fur and tweed. The severe formal looks were made contemporary with hooded bodysuits and stretch jumpers and mixed with more relaxed outfits like hoodie dresses and flared jeans. Lace-embellished slip dresses, crushed satin, and sequins also made an appearance. Let's take a look at some of the pieces below.
