New York Men's Day at New York Fashion Week - A Hand Tailored Suit

New York Men's Day at New York Fashion Week

New York Men's Day took place on the 11th February during the Autumn/Winter 22 fashion week in New York. It's held twice a year and is dedicated to showcasing some of the most innovative and new talent in the menswear fashion industry, as well as those who specialise in creating gender-neutral styles. As we've already delved into some of the sharpest collections from the entirety of New York Fashion Week, let's take a look at what will be influencing the menswear for the Autumn/Winter season.

These models are sporting just two of the dandy looks this collection had to offer during New York Men's Day. The first is a three-piece check grey suit that's worn with a white/off-white buttoned shirt underneath that's customised with a short collar. The button placket is covered as the waistcoat is fastened with four buttons in the centre and the neckline finishing mid-chest. The notched hem on the waistcoat is quite high and on the jacket is a two-button front with high notch lapels. The second grey suit is quite smart too, with two flapped pockets on the front and the ticket pocket sitting above. One black button fastens up the jacket as the peak lapels broaden the shoulders and a sharp centre crease is visible on the front of the slim trousers.

From the same collection, a deep red print on a black background featured within some looks also, providing quite a Victorian gothic style of tailoring. The first look here is a double-breasted suit with a six-button front, worn with a black pleated dress shirt underneath and the same short collar. The welt and flapped pockets were noticeable enough and observing closely, both the flapped pockets are designed with alternate black and red jets. The trousers were a slim cut with its centre crease and the peak lapels mirrored the structure of the shoulders well, the same strong line as seen in the next look. Underneath the long tailored coat, the model wore a sheer black shirt with a black covered button placket and short collar. The coat features notch lapels and a three-button front with a matching fabric belt tied across the centre. The flapped pockets also made an appearance as the jacket hem finished mid-thigh to create this high angled notch. Note the matching grey pinstripe waistcoat and trouser ensemble a model wears in the background, another fine example.

The collection involved primarily a red, black, white and grey colour scheme through with some outfits very in tune with the monochromatic style such as this one. The model wears a peak lapel tweed check overcoat and matching trousers, with the red wrapped top underneath showing a contrast in fabric texture. The coat is a two-button design with classic flapped and welt pockets pattern-matching; but as well as it being all one colour, the speckled shimmer just lifts the garment more, especially with the shine of the model's black gloves pairing with it too.

Nicholas Raefski

From Victorian gothic to something with a bit of pop in the Nicholas Raefski collection as the model sports a rather casual camel two-piece suit. With the suit, a white shirt is worn with a slightly wide collar and black tie. The jacket is completed with two brown horn buttons on the front and notch lapels as the shoulder line is fairly relaxed, but the shoulders still slightly raised. The white detailing on the jacket and trousers is what makes this look pop, symmetrical on both sides of the jacket and trousers to make this quite a quirky look.

The collection was quite vibrant and groovy thanks to the range of patterns that were involved in the knitwear, some looks including pattern clashing much like the first and third look above. The first ensemble portrays a diamond patterned knitted vest layered over a circular printed blouse that was grey and white in colour. The classic collar doesn't distract from the subtle V-neck of the vest, whilst in the last outfit, a blue/black printed zip knit is styled over a blue circular patterned shirt. It's left open collar for a proper relaxed feel to the ensemble. The middle look shows the model wearing a purple, white and black long-sleeved crew neck jumper with a pair of tan and camel corduroy trousers, a look that would certainly make a statement in the Autumn/Winter season whilst keeping warm.

STAN

It's a fun take on the classic check suit as the model displays a two-piece grey/blue patchwork design from the STAN range. To break up the dark blues and greys in the suit, each square was outlined with a colourful windowpane check that included red, yellow, ink and turquoise to spruce up this look. On the front of the jacket were two buttons for the fastening and three flapped pockets including a ticket pocket. The shoulders are broad and boxy and the notch lapels are quite short as the top of the welt pocket is outlined in pink, ensuring it isn't lost within the design. The trousers are high-waisted and the waistband itself quite thick as a single button sits on the one side of what are a pair of slightly tapered, yet relaxed trousers.

Teddy Vonranson

This particular ensemble is a perfect example of autumnal layering as the model wears a relaxed deep purple cashmere/wool blend overcoat from the Teddy Vonranson collection. It's designed with wide notch lapels that have an extra reinforcement stitch around the edge, large patch pockets and black buttons for the double-breasted front. The shoulders are very relaxed and drape below the natural shoulderline as underneath, is a two-piece purple corduroy set. As can be seen, the jacket has two patch pockets at the bottom and a four-button front with a wide stance. The collar is classic and left unbuttoned to show the cream shirt worn underneath and the brown ribbed roll neck knit. The trousers include side pockets as is demonstrated and the hint of a centre crease down the front.

STAN

Another sharp attire from the STAN collection as the model's jacket in particular is quite striking. The piece is worn with navy blue striped trousers and a beige monogrammed knit with a matching striped shirt, but the jacket is detailed with floral embroidery on the notch lapels, along the sleeve cuffs and on the pocket flaps. It's a unique number with black satin detailing indicating the jacket cuffs and made into a contrasting black welt pocket, not forgetting the binding around the edge of the collar. A few of these details certainly indicate a hint of inspiration from old military-style jackets.

William Frederick

Cool and casual tailoring works wonders and the collection of William Frederick displayed examples of just that and conveyed the perfect smart/casual vibe. The far left look is a simple crew neck tee tucked into a pair of wide-legged grey check trousers, whilst the second look is a houndstooth check waistcoat left undone over a white relaxed tee. It includes a five-button front and an angled notch, styled with dark navy trousers that are slightly lighter than the trousers worn in the third look. The jacket includes a Cuban collar and black buttons down the front with two black sleeve belts on the cuffs. The final look is also quite minimal as a loose grey shirt with the cuffs rolled up is ticked into a pair of sand chinos.

New York Men's Day definitely delivered with some inspirational and trendy pieces, combined with classic silhouettes and details that will retain sartorial sophistication. Check out a few more pieces below showcased on the day, including more overcoats and soft colours from Teddy Vonranson, artistic prints from STAN and a cool puffer coat from Perry Ellis America.
