Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Chanel - A Hand Tailored Suit

Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Chanel

Paris Fashion Week took place this year between the 25th of September and the 3rd of October, 2023, at many venues throughout the city. The biggest and most well-known brands, such as Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy, hosted their shows at historical locations such as the Carrousel du Louvre and the Grand Palais.

Virginie Viard paid homage to the Villa Noailles, a modernist haven created by art patrons Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles in the South of France, in her Spring/Summer 2024 collection for Chanel on the final day of Fashion Week. The runway included classic Chanel boucle skirt suits, sailor tops, dressing gown coats, maxi dresses, and sheer gowns (of course!). The collection played with colour and texture, layering geometric and striped prints with jewelled tops, chevron trim and asymmetrical designs.

Take a look at the full runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.

Outfit #1

A classic Chanel boucle mini skirt suit was given an up-to-date makeover with a bubblegum pink check pattern, chevron trim around the hems and cuffs, and an asymmetrical skirt. The jacket was buttonless; instead, the button placket was folded back on itself to reveal a black floral pattern on a white background that contrasted with the rest of the suit's material. The look was finished with decorative vintage-looking black floral body chains.

Here is another classic Chanel skirt suit, this time in pastel and black patchwork, paired with an untucked black silk camisole top.

Outfit #3

A geometric design jewel-toned top, meant to evoke the windows of the Villa Noailles, elevated the white check boucle double-breasted skirt suit into an evening look, as did the black satin bubble-sleeved opera-like gloves. The skirt was trimmed in gold at the waistband and pocket edge, further adding a touch of evening glamour.

Outfit #4

Taking inspiration from the popular 1920s pyjama look, this suit, in black checks, had a loose oversized fit and exaggerated palazzo trousers. The jacket was again buttonless, fastening in front with a belt tied in a bow that also served to add shape to its boxy oversized cut.

Outfit #5

Finally, this navy blue knee-length boucle skirt suit had a more utilitarian feel to it. The jacket was short and single-breasted with short and wide shawl lapels, whose formality contrasted with the enormous waist-level cargo-style flap pockets, contrasting buttons, loose fit, and flare-cuff sleeves.
