Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Givenchy - A Hand Tailored Suit

Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Givenchy

Paris Fashion Week is taking place this year between the 25th of September and the 3rd of October, 2023, at many venues throughout the city. The biggest and most well-known brands, such as Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy, host their shows at historical locations such as the Carrousel du Louvre and the Grand Palais.

Matthew M. Williams presented his collection for Givenchy on the 28th of September on the grounds of l’École Militaire. The runway featured a display of restrained elegance in romantic hand-painted, printed, or embroidered floral motifs and elegant skirt suits. Tailoring was front and centre in sharp, sculpted silhouettes and oversized and relaxed silhouettes. Lace and jewels, including latticed pearl, glass, and crystal, continued the romantic, elegant theme on evening dresses and skirts. Of course, the current trend of transparent material seen on this season's runways was also present.

Take a look at the full runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.

Outfit #1

Givenchy presented a twist on the traditional tuxedo in this skirt suit. The boxy double-breasted cream jacket had square padded shoulders, an asymmetrical closure, straight welt pockets, and contrasting satin peak lapels. The cut of the jacket was balanced by the slim-fitting straight-cut pencil skirt in black with a side slit on the left seam for ease of movement and comfort.

Outfit #2

Here, a grey ribbed polo-style shirt was tucked into a matching coloured pencil skirt with a romantic and flowy transparent overlay decorated with a white and blue floral motif. The slim fit of the look complemented the more blockish, oversized and relaxed cut of the beautiful buttery yellow satin evening coat with its short and wide peak lapels, flap pockets, and padded shoulders.

A 90s-style chocolate brown lingerie slip dress was elevated into a formal evening look with a grey wool oversized double-breasted jacket.

Outfit #4

Dior gave the plain white shirt an intriguing overhaul in its collection, and Givenchy followed suit. A slim-fitting black ankle-length pencil skirt was paired with a criss-cross fronted white shirt with a slouchy, relaxed fit and bishop sleeves.

Outfit #5

Finally, a fluttery transparent bead embellished black skirt and v-neck crop top was uplifted by a pop of colour in this azure satin evening coat. Like many of the jackets in the collection, it was boxy and oversized with short and wide lapels and flap pockets.
