Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Louis Vuitton - A Hand Tailored Suit

Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Louis Vuitton

Paris Fashion Week is taking place this year between the 25th of September and the 3rd of October, 2023, at many venues throughout the city. The biggest and most well-known brands, such as Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy, host their shows at historical locations such as the Carrousel du Louvre and the Grand Palais.

Nicolas Ghesquière presented the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2024 runway on the Champs-Elysee. The venue was draped in orange plastic that bathed it in a sunset-like light. A giant hot air balloon was parked in the middle of one of Paris' busiest streets, echoing the theme of the collection of air determining shape. The concept was displayed in the clothes with bubble hems on jackets, splits in tailoring to allow flow, parachute sleeves on blouses, and loosely draped skirts. Parts of the show were very 80s in style, with slightly muted bright colours, white tights, and power shoulders. There was also a Y2K look in the slouchy bomber jackets, asymmetrical skirts, and thick belts that fastened over the hips. Sequined evening gowns, silk pyjama-inspired sets, and structured tailored outfits all featured, too.

Take a look at the full runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.

Outfit #1

The 80s inspiration was very apparent in this houndstooth jacket with its oversized boxy silhouette, high collar, extreme shoulder pads, and black button placket with gold statement buttons. It was given a modern twist and followed the theme of the runway by having hip-high slits at each side front panel to allow for more flow in the garment. The layered necklaces (which were present on many of the tailored outfits throughout the collection) and white tights added to the contemporary-retro crossover feel of the look.

Outfit #2

This black pantsuit also had the 80s-style power shoulders and Ghesquière's flow-enhancing slits. However, it was slim-fitting with a nipped-in waist and tapering trousers. It also featured beautiful mismatched but cohesive statement buttons.

Outfit #3

This jacket evoked an 80s military feel with its plethora of gold buttons arranged in an upside-down triangular shape across the front. Combined with the enormous padded shoulders, it gave the illusion of a tiny cinched waist amongst the severe box-like structure.

Outfit #4

Structure and flow were played against each other within this ensemble. The cream pinstripe shirt-like top had a draped-looking but rigid off-the-shoulder yoke. The rest of the shirt cascaded floorwards in reems of fluttery asymmetrical fabric that sat underneath and rippled from beneath the hem of the traditional slim-fitting black pencil skirt.

Outfit #5

Finally, this outfit looks like a classic taupe-coloured, printed pantsuit with a matching overcoat. However, the material was different from the usual suiting type. It was more pyjama-like in its lightness, flow, and transparency. It still featured traditional suiting elements, including the ever-present power shoulder of this collection, a double-breasted jacket, and short, wide lapels.
