Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Saint Laurent - A Hand Tailored Suit

Paris Fashion Week 2023 Highlights: Saint Laurent

Paris Fashion Week is taking place this year between the 25th of September and the 3rd of October, 2023, at many venues throughout the city. The biggest and most well-known brands, such as Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy, host their shows at historical locations such as the Carrousel du Louvre and the Grand Palais.

Anthony Vaccarello presented Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 2024 offering with the Eiffel Tower looming large behind the runway. This season, his focus was on chic elegance and traditionally masculine silhouettes adapted for the female form with loose fits and cinched waists inspired by pioneering female pilots like Amelia Earhart and Adrienne Bollard. The muted earthy tones of the collection were seen in jumpsuits, mid-length pencil skirts, and jackets with large square pockets and gold button detailing. There was, as seen on many other runways this season and last, a smattering of daring transparent looks, too.

Take a look at the full runway show before we dive into some of the pieces that particularly caught our eye.

Outfit #1

A pair of slim-fitting but comfortable and slouchily fit tapering ocher-coloured trousers were paired with a matching coloured safari-style shirt-jacket hybrid featuring large square pockets at the breast and hips. The outfit was made from light and floaty fabric that enhanced the feminine feel of a usually masculine look, as did the cinching of the waist with a slim brown leather belt. It was accessorised with aviator glasses and long leather gloves as a further nod to the collection's inspiration.

Outfit #2

The trench coat was reimagined at both the Burberry and Dior shows this season, and Saint Laurent added their version. This khaki brown example featured all the usual pieces that define a trench coat - collar, rain shield, belt, double-breasted- but with a twist. The collar was belted, and the enormous asymmetrical breast pocket was tilted at a 45-degree angle.

Outfit #3

This sheer chocolate brown floor-length dress had a loose, unfitted bodice, voluminous skirt, and sleeves with large statement ruffles.

Outfit #4

A comfortable, loose-fitting black bandeau jumpsuit was given a masculine, military edge with cargo-style pockets on the straight-cut trousers. The leather gloves and aviator glasses also nodded to the manly look, while the oversized bracelets, earrings, and waist-nipping belt added back some femininity.

Outfit #5

Finally, this black leather halter-neck scoop-backed mini dress was made to look like the model was about to jump into her plane with an aviator balaclava and glasses.
