Paris Haute Couture Week, July 2025: Maison Margiela
Share
Paris Haute Couture Week takes place twice a year, in January and July, where the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections are showcased, respectively. Haute Couture Week represents the height of fashion craftsmanship, where dresses can take hundreds of hours to create and must be made to measure in order to qualify as couture. This year, Haute Couture Week took place from July 7 to 10, featuring collections from fashion powerhouses such as Chanel, Balenciaga, Armani Privé, and Maison Margiela.
Glenn Martens presented his debut collection for Maison Margiela on July 9 at Le Centquatre in Paris' 19th arrondissement. Titled "Artisanal 2025", the theme of the collection was dark, daring, and DIY aesthetics. There was a focus on masks embellished with appliquéd lace, crystals, organza, and hammered metal, a Maison Margiela staple that pays homage to Martin Margiela's first collection for Spring/Summer 1989. According to Martens, the collection was inspired by medieval architecture, Flemish wallpaper, and 17th-century Dutch 'nature morte' paintings. The materials used were recycled linings, old leather, plastics, and costume jewellery. Garments included transparent wrinkled plastic dresses, sculptural coats and cloaks, and architectural gowns. The feel of the collection was distinctly post-apocalyptic: a sense of make-do and mend. Watch the video of the whole runway show below.
