Sports Personality of the Year 2022 - A Hand Tailored Suit

Sports Personality of the Year 2022

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is an annual event that occurred on the 21 December. The award has been given since 1954. This year the ceremony took place in Salford at the dock10 studios and was co-hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott. Footballer Beth Mead won the 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, becoming the first female footballer to win! Runner-up was cricketer Ben Stokes and curler Eve Muirhead finished third. Let's look at some of the most eye-catching red-carpet outfits from this year's event.

Beth Mead

Footballer and winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, Beth Mead, arrived on the red carpet looking stunning in an emerald green silk suit with high-waisted wide-legged trousers. The jacket was single-breasted and sported wide notch-lapels to complement the width of the trouser legs, and the sleeves were baggy and gathered at the wrists to echo the baggy bunching of the trousers at her ankles. The loose and relaxed fit and the black bandeau top she paired it with gave an event-appropriate but casual twist to the suit. She finished the outfit off with pristine white trainers.

Denise Lewis

Denise Lewis, the sports presenter and former track and field athlete, came to the event in a deep purple velvet suit. The high-waisted trousers were flared at the bottom, and the peaked lapels of the jacket, edged in complementary purple satin, came quite low on her torso and finished with a single button closure, creating an elongated silhouette. Extending her legs further were gold strappy towering high-heels that she matched with a sparkly gold clutch bag.

Jessica Ennis-Hill

Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill chose to rock up to the event in an asymmetric tea-length sky-blue gown. The neckline was gathered and structured with wire, leading to a ruched cap sleeve on one side. The skirt had a knee-length slit in the left seam, adding movement and flirtiness. The dress was cinched at the waist for extra shape with a silver mirrored belt.

Ricky Hatton

Ricky Hatton, the former professional boxer and now trainer, appeared on the red carpet looking very sophisticated. He donned a single-breasted black satin jacquard jacket with plain satin shawl lapels matching his classic collar silk shirt and wide tie. He completed the outfit with matt black loose-fitting trousers for a contrast in texture and fit.

Jake Wightman

Scottish middle-distance runner Jake Wightman appeared in a beautifully tailored, slim-fitting single-breasted light grey suit at the ceremony. The jacket's slim notch lapels complemented the trousers' slim fit, and the flap pockets gave it a less formal feel. He paired the suit with a spread-collar white shirt and a contrasting skinny black tie that harmonised with the overall lengthening effect of the look.

Jona Efoloko

The British sprinter Jona Efoloko looked formal and refined in a dark plum-coloured velvet jacket with a single button closure, black satin shawl lapels and double vents. The front opening of the jacket reached low down on his torso, revealing the traditional white dinner shirt with its tiny black buttons and wing-tip collar. He paired the shirt with a black velvet bow tie to match the texture of his jacket and finished the outfit with slim-fitting matt black trousers for another textural element.
