The famous MTV Video Music Awards returned to New Jersey last weekend (28th August 2022), hosted by Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow and LL Cool J. Celebrating the best music videos that have been released over the last year, we saw many of the biggest names in the music industry attend the event, taking to the red carpet and delivering some iconic looks that we can always expect to see at such a star-filled event. In case you missed who wore what to this year's awards, here are some of our favourite looks of the night.
Taylor Swift
As her music video for "All Too Well" won Video of the Year, Best Longform Video and Best Direction, singer/songwriter Taylor Swift dazzled in a silver Oscar de la Renta minidress. The dress was sleeveless with a sparkling jewel chain draping around her arms to the back, whilst the front of the dress replicated many layers of jewellery draping down also. A cowl back was also mirrored through the use of one line of gems draping down from the mid-high neck of the dress.
Conan Gray
Singer/songwriter Conan Gray donned an up-cycled wedding dress look as designed by Harris Reed to this year's VMAs. The wedding dress would be turned into a graceful maxi-length jacket/coat that would be styled over a pair of high-waisted black trousers, delivering impact and a statement also. The top part of the jacket would feature the classic details of a well-tailored shoulderline and peak lapels on the front, with the lapel points slightly rounded for a softer and more elegant finish. The hem then curves dramatically down and we see the sheer fabric drape down to the floor into a long train running behind, before finished with lace around the scalloped hem.
Offset
Rapper Offset attended the awards donning a crisp white monochromatic suiting look, consisting of a short jacket and wide-legged trousers. The jacket is slightly short in the body for that casual feel, balanced out with the peak lapels and collar folded flat and upright, creating a sharp line down the centre front fastening. The welt pocket sat on a angle on the chest as the two single jet pockets were positioned vertically on the sides. With a slight rounded shape on the shoulders, the sleeve line fell down into a subtle flared cuff to mirror the relaxed silhouette of the trousers. These were constructed with a subtle centre crease and the hem falling over the trainers, making sure not to fully cover them as the pop of green just adds an extra cool finish.
Kiran + Nivi
Twin sisters and band Kiran + Nivi (Nivi Saishankar and Kiran Saishankar) looked cool and casually stylish at the VMAs, with Kiran wearing an aquamarine shirt dress and Nivi sporting a two-piece check suit. Kiran's dress is of a slightly relaxed silhouette with the pockets low down and the hem finishing below the knees. The sleeves appear to be gathered at the cuff to create this fullness they deliver, whilst wearing collar open enhances this relaxed nature of the garment. Nivi's grey two-piece suit is designed with pink running through the check that is perfectly picked out through the ruffled collar blouse worn underneath. The jacket is long in length with flapped pockets almost level with the one-button front, whilst the casual vibe of the tailoring is echoed through the notch lapels and the subtle flared hem of the trousers.
Tayshia Adams
TV personality and presenter Tayshia Adams stunned in a simple yet elegant teal blue Tarik Ediz evening gown. With a sharp semi-sweetheart neckline across the top, the dress showcases subtle fabric manipulation on the bodice before it smooths out down towards the hem and the train behind. The thigh-high split at times is covered by the additional gathered fabric panel that Adams flares out whilst arriving at the event, showing the contrast in textures of the layered fabric to really elevate the chic nature of the gown.
Colton Haynes
Actor Colton Haynes was spotted wearing a green Dior monochromatic suit to the MTV VMAs on the weekend, accessorising with a sleek pair of sunglasses and chunky platform black boots. The jacket itself fastens in the style of a double-breasted silhouette, with only the one button on show to keep this look quite minimal in its details. With four-button cuffs and peak lapels, a single vent was cut into the back and four thin double jet pockets positioned on the centre. The front lines were cut with a smooth curve leading round to the hem, contrasted by the sharp lines of the centre front crease and flared hem on the trousers.
Chris Olsen
Social media personality Chris Olsen went bold for this event wearing a vibrant red two-piece suit, paired with a chevron retro patterned top underneath. The combination of the black, blue and beige colours in the high-neck top almost bring back the strong impact of the red suit, whilst in its own way creating a statement style itself. Focusing on the jacket, it was a one-button design with contrasting satin peak lapels and pocket jets that could be seen above the pocket flaps. With an angled welt pocket on the chest also, the sleeves would be finished with a classic four-button cuff. The trousers were slim with the slight tapered hem sitting over the shoes and a centre crease just noticeable, contrasting the refined red satin stripes seen on the sides.
Chloe Flower
Pianist and composer Chloe Flower kept it quite retro and chic attending the awards, wearing a mini Celine polka dot black and white dress with voluminous sleeves, accessorising with a black velvet hat (possibly pillbox style). The polka dot pattern itself was enlarged to mirror the fullness that the sleeves convey. The style of the dress was off-shoulder, outlined by the massive bow detailing that would curve round to the back and make it look like the sleeves are almost hidden in the dress itself. The white heels echo the white polka dots involved, strengthening the minimal look even more.
Betty Who
Singer/songwriter Betty Who looked sleek for the event, wearing a black two-piece suit with a crisp white shirt and a fabric belt tie around the waist. It gave a modern evening twist almost to a classic black suit, designed with its two-button front, flapped pockets and notch lapels, one of these accessorised with a lapel pin. The welt pocket was slightly angled on the chest, whilst the sleeve cuffs were finished in the four-button overlapping style. The white shirt cuffs were noticeably longer than the jacket sleeve, creating a defined outline to the look and balancing out the wing collar of the shirt itself. The jacket shoulders were rounded and the trousers were a straight-leg cut with the traditional subtle centre crease.
Dometi Pongo
TV host and journalist Dometi Pongo donned an effortless suiting look whilst arriving to the awards wearing a sky blue double-breasted suit. The jacket was a six-button style (3x3 buttons) with narrow flapped pockets positioned either side and just below the waist. The welt pocket was slightly angled on the front and the peak lapels were a standard width to maintain the coolness of the look. The shoulders were softly padded and well-tailored before leading down into the buttoned cuffs, the same brown horn buttons that are seen throughout. The trousers are finished at the ankles with turn-up cuffs and are the perfect length to pair with the black loafers, whilst the sharpness of the straight-leg line is kept refined through the subtle centre crease.
Murda Beatz
Echoing the autumnal tones was record producer Murda Beatz, wearing a matching wine red Fendi two-piece suit with a lighter burgundy crew neck underneath and gold accents through the accessories. The jacket was also a double-breasted cut with four buttons on the front, a welt pocket on the chest and two thin double jet pockets below the waist. The cuffs were kept minimal with two buttons only, whilst the peak lapels were wide and curved slightly down to the middle of the jacket. A matching buttonhole was embroidered on the one lapel and with the trousers, two front pockets were included in the design. The trousers were slim as the hem sat just above the burgundy loaders with a subtle break above the ankle.
Chloë Bailey
Sparkling in a bejewelled Zigman silver gown was singer/songwriter Chloë Bailey, whose dress had a certain Art Deco feel about it through the fitted bodice in the gown as her video "Have Mercy" was nominated for Best R&B. The centre design was created with what looks to be metallic panelling to create such a geometric form, outlined by silver sequins to soften the impact of the reflective lines, but also capturing the spotlight even more. Straps were attached to the sweetheart neckline as the one half also featured an off-shoulder design thanks to the fabric draping around to the back. To contrast the bodice, the skirt would include a subtle twisting or layering detail from the hip across, creating subtle folds in the fabric that would smooth down to a floor-length, thigh-high split hem.
