After a build-up lasting months and including pre-wedding events, such as a European cruise with performances by Katy Perry and Andrea Bocelli and a pre-wedding party with a rare appearance by Rihanna and two hundred elephants, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant got married in Mumbai, India, in a series of traditional ceremonies that lasted from the 5th to the 14th of July. The groom, Anant Ambani, is the youngest son of Mukesh Ambani, who is thought to be the wealthiest man in Asia with, according to Forbes, a net worth of $121.5 billion. The bride, Radhika Merchant, is the daughter of Viren Merchant, who is a pharmaceutical magnate. Thousands of guests came to the lavish wedding, with everyone from political leaders to Bollywood icons making appearances in traditional Indian wedding attire. Radhika Merchant: The Bride
As the wedding took place over several days, there were plenty of outfit changes for the bride. However, for the actual wedding ceremony, Radhika wore an Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla design in the traditional Gujarati bridal colours of red and white (although in her dress, this was interpreted as more of an ivory tone). The outfit consisted of a trailing long skirt (ghagra) and blouse (choli), a second, detachable train, a veil, and a dupatta (a long shawl-like scarf). The entire outfit was worked in Zardozi embroidery, a type of elaborate embroidery using metal thread, gold or silver, on a silk or satin base. The whole effect was a stunning glittering display.
The Groom: Anant Ambani
The groom, Anant Ambani, had many outfit changes, too. At his Lagna Vidhi, Anant donned a red and gold bejewelled sherwani (a long-sleeved outer coat) adorned with an elephant broach encrusted with diamonds. He paired it with white churidars (traditional Indian trousers) that were looser above the knee.
