The BAFTAs 2023: Best-Dressed Men

The 76th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held on the 19th of February, 2023, at the Royal Festival Hall within London's Southbank Centre. Awards were given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for the best British and international films and documentaries of 2022. Actor Richard E. Grant hosted the ceremony, and the night's biggest winner was the German language anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front, winning seven awards. Celebrity nominees and guests swarmed the red carpet in their best evening attire.

For the men at this awards ceremony, unlike many others we have looked at recently, the sartorial consensus was along traditional tailoring lines with the occasional contemporary tweak. Let's have a look at some of the ensembles that caught our eye.

Taron Egerton

Actor Taron Egerton chose a traditional black Giorgio Armani dinner suit for his red carpet appearance. The jacket featured straight jetted pockets, a two-button closure, and satin peak lapels. Paired with a white dress shirt, classic black bow tie, and loose-fitting trousers, Egerton looked stylish and dapper.

Paapa Essiedu

English actor Paapa Essiedu, known for starring in the miniseries I May Destroy You, rocked up to the awards ceremony in an Hermes suit. The black jacket was slightly less formal, with patch pockets and notch lapels. The high-waisted trousers and high-collared cream shirt with chain detailing gave this look a very late 18th-century feel!

Martin Freeman

Martin Freeman mixed things up a little, opting for a cream double-breasted jacket and contrasting slim-fitting black trousers by Paul Smith. He matched his white shirt to his silk pocket square and his bow tie to his trousers to give a cohesive and intentionally mismatched look.

Jamie Dornan

Irish actor Jamie Dornan, best known as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades franchise, also chose a double-breasted suit, this time in black. The suit, by Omega, featured satin lapels, patch pockets, padded shoulders, and a contrasting white lining that could occasionally be glimpsed at the jacket's edges.

Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne arrived on the red carpet in an unusual Alexander McQueen tuxedo jumpsuit. The cut of the trousers was very 70s-inspired with large flared hems. The satin lapels and buttons echoed the satin stripe down the outside seam of the trouser. Following recent trends, Redmayne chose to go shirtless underneath the jumpsuit, showing a peek of his bare chest.
