The 77th British Academy Film Arts Awards (BAFTAs) were held on the 18th of February, 2024, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The BAFTAs honour the best national and international films of the previous year, with Oppenheimer coming out on top with the most awards. Cillian Murphy was celebrated as Best Actor for Oppenheimer, Emma Stone as Best Actress for Poor Things, and Oppenheimer won Best Film.
Of course, here at A Hand Tailored Suit, an awards event is a chance for us to eye up the best (and worst!) dressed on the red carpet. The men this year tended to stick with the traditional black suit, though there were a few pops of colour here and there, and flared trousers were very popular. Let's take a look at some of the looks dished up by the male arrivals.
David Tennant
Scottish actor and host for the evening David Tennant pulled out all the stops in an absolutely stunning emerald green and gold jacquard slim-fitting double-breasted suit with short peak lapels, slanted flap pockets, and straight-cut trousers. He finished the look with a black shirt and matching tie.
Kingsley Ben-Adir
Bob Marley: One Love actor Kingsley Ben-Adir chose an all-black Gucci ensemble. The double-breasted jacket had peak lapels edged in satin for textural contrast, and the tapered trousers were slightly loose for a more relaxed feel. He added a splash of colour with a red enamel pin on his right front jacket panel.
Dominic Sessa
Dominic Sessa, nominated for Best Supporting Actor in The Holdovers, went full 70s in an oversized black velvet suit with enormous satin peak lapels, shoulder pads, and flared trousers. He paired it with a scarlet shirt that he left unbuttoned to show his chest a la Saturday Night Fever.
Cillian Murphy
Winner of Best Leading Actor for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy donned an asymmetrical black mandarin collar shirt, black cummerbund, and tapered black trousers. He rounded off the ensemble with a calf-length wool evening coat, black scarf, and patent dress shoes.
Andrew Scott
All of Us Strangers actor Andrew Scott stood out from the crowd in a cherry-coloured single-breasted suit with sloping natural shoulders, scarlet satin peak lapels, and a matching coloured shirt left unbuttoned and tie-less to show off a delicate gold chain at his neck.
