In recent articles, we have looked at the best influencers to follow for advice and inspiration on your style. Here we are looking at some of the most sartorially blessed male celebrities to take inspiration from.
Ryan Reynolds
A-list actor Ryan Reynolds, known for blockbusters such as Deadpool, Free Guy, and Red Notice, is the epitome of timeless style, often choosing tuxedos and three-piece suits. Even in more casual attire, he still looks smart and put together, wearing shirts and trousers rather than, for example, jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. In an interview with Esquire, Reynolds told them that "it's an old-fashioned quality of mine. I have to stick to proper shirts and trousers if I go outside." He always looks well-dressed due to his ability to dress for his body type. Being a muscular man, he counts on slim-fitting, beautifully-tailored pieces to ensure that he always appears tall and lean. Below are a few of our favourite of his looks.
Reynolds chose a classic black tuxedo at the April 2023 Canadian Screen Awards. Still, far from being boring, he picked a jacket made of velvet to contrast with and add interest to the material of his lapels and trousers. The jacket also featured an intricate and delicate embroidered closure, unlike the regular one-button closures seen on most tuxedos.
One of Reynold's staple looks is the classic three-piece suit. He chose a double-breasted waistcoat at the November 2022 Apple Original Film's "Spirited" New York Red Carpet. At the US-Entertainment-Media-WSJ Innovator Awards, he donned a single-breasted example. He makes these looks his own by picking brown leather dress shoes instead of the traditional patent black and even lowers the formality of the double-breasted version by opting to wear it without a tie, known as an "air tie", and adopted recently by many celebrities, including Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Radcliffe, and Michael B Jordan.
As noted above, even in his more casual sartorial moments, he still looks dapper in a shirt and trousers. Here he's forgone the tie and socks and paired his shirt and trousers with trainers to create a smart but relaxed look.
Hugh Jackman
Australian actor Hugh Jackman has become a household name over the last twenty years, primarily for his record-breaking role as X-Man Wolverine. However, he has appeared in many other successful films, including Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman. On the red carpet, his go-to look is a classic suit, but his preferred style combines formal elements, such as jackets and shirts, with more casual pieces like jeans.
At the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Jackman donned a gorgeous chocolate brown single-breasted suit with peak lapels and flap pockets. He has a slim body type, so he paired slim-fitting straight-legged trousers with a more loose-fitting shoulder-padded jacket to give the illusion of a broader torso. The matching coloured blood-red pocket square and textured tie add interest to the classic suit.
At the Missing Link film premiere, Hugh combined formal and informal elements to create a cohesive and unique look. He paired traditional light grey slim-fitting tailored trousers and oxblood dress shoes with a more casual polo shirt in bright orange and finished the outfit with a bomber-style jacket. At Wimbledon this year, he mixed formal and relaxed with a white crew-neck T-shirt under a dressy navy blue jacket with flap pockets and notch lapels.
Brad Pitt
Hollywood acting superstar Brad Pitt, known for films such as Seven, Fight Club, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has always been looked to for his style. In his younger years, you were most likely to see him in jeans and a T-shirt, but recently his clothing has undergone an evolution. Of course, he has worn a classic suit to some red-carpet events but has also appeared in more experimental suiting styles.
At the film premiere of Babylon in Paris in January 2023, Pitt chose a traditional, beautifully tailored black single-breasted slim-fitting suit with peak lapels, jetted pockets, and padded shoulders with a matching black shirt. The shirt was partially unbuttoned with no tie for a more relaxed feel.
At the Los Angeles Premiere Of Columbia Pictures' Bullet Train, Pitt chose a less conventional suit of bright green linen with slouchy, almost jogging bottom-style trousers with a drawstring waist. He paired it with a teal-coloured polo shirt and finished the "wear-a-suit-but-make-it-casual" outfit with golden low-top Adidas Gazelle trainers.
Pitt appears to like this more relaxed approach to wearing a suit as he donned a similar style, but in grey with a yellow polo shirt, at the Bullet Train stage greeting at Toho Cinemas in Kyoto.
