This year's Cannes Film Festival ran from the 14th to the 25th of May 2024. It was the 77th time the annual event took place, which acts as a competition and celebrates and screens the premieres of the best in international films. Greta Gerwig, recently of Barbie fame, was jury president for the main competition. French actress Camille Cottin, known in the UK for her roles in series such as Killing Eve and Brassic, hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. The Second Act, a French comedy film directed by Quentin Dupieux, opened the festival.
The numerous red-carpet events paved the way for two weeks of fabulous celebrity style. There is a famously strict black-tie dress code for men, but some choose to bend the rules a little. We've highlighted fourteen of the most eye-catching men's outfits below.
Adam Driver
Adam Driver attended the Megalopolis premiere in a Burberry white tuxedo jacket, pleated white silk shirt, black wool trousers, and a black bow tie.
Ben Whishaw
Ben Whishaw chose a Bottega Veneta gabardine suit and white tank top for the Limonov screening.
Lucien Laviscount
Lucien Laviscount donned a Dolce & Gabbana suit with exaggeratedly short, notch lapels at the Marcello Mio premiere.
Richard Gere
At the Oh, Canada screening, Richard Gere stuck closely to the dress code in a classic black tuxedo, white dress shirt, and black bow tie.
Omar Sy
For the premiere of Emilia Perez, Omar Sy chose to grace the red carpet in a long black double-breasted evening coat, a black top, and straight-cut trousers by Ami. He accessorised with a diamond choker.
Chris Hemsworth
At the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga screening, Chris Hemsworth followed the rules to some degree, donning a Tom Ford ivory tuxedo jacket, black trousers, and a white dress shirt. However, he put his own casual spin on the rules by unbuttoning the jacket and collar and foregoing the bow tie.
Evan Ross
Evan Ross made a classic look more edgy at the Parthenope premiere. He donned a classic Saint Laurent black tuxedo but paired it with a draped black silk shirt and patent leather ankle boots, along with his signature eyebrow slit and nose ring.
Alton Mason
Model Alton Mason is known for his stylish dress, and his look for the Megalopolis screening was no exception. He donned a grey suit by Louis Gabriel Nouchi that featured a swirl print and an oversized fit. The jacket was cinched at the waist, creating a unique, baggy, fitted structure. He finished the look with pointed boots and a tiered silver chain necklace.
Barry Keoghan
Barry Keoghan wore a suit by Burberry for the screening of his film Bird. He wore a black collared grey jacket with black trousers and a ruffled white shirt.
Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe went more traditional at the premiere of Kinds of Kindness in a monochromatic suit by Prada.
Joe Alwyn
Joe Alwyn also attended the Kinds of Kindness screening. He opted for a black suit with subtly boot-cut trousers, satin lapels, a skinny tie, and a deep opening at his jacket front.
James Franco
At the Emilia Perez premiere, James Franco wore a classic black tuxedo with satin peak lapels, a black bow tie, and a white dress shirt.
Lukas Dhont
Belgian director Lukas Dhont attended the La Plus Precieuse Des Marchandises screening in a black double-breasted Bottega Veneta suit with a mint green shirt and tie for some colour and interest.
Pierre Niney
Pierre Niney, a French actor, strolled the red carpet at the premiere of The Count of Monte Cristo in a beautiful sapphire blue single-breasted, slim-fitting suit with casual flap pockets and contrasting black satin shawl lapels. He paired it with an airy-looking black shirt left unbuttoned and no tie.
