The Golden Globes 2024: Women's Style

Last night, the eighty-first Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The Golden Globes celebrate the best of film and television from the past year and were dominated by the film Oppenheimer, which took home five gongs, and the television series Succession, which won four trophies. The number one film of 2023, Barbie, was also celebrated, as was BeefKillers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things.

Of course, anyone who is anyone in Hollywood strutted the red carpet and showed off their sartorial style. The ladies wore the classic red carpet attire of fancy gowns, but there was plenty of variety in material, silhouettes, and, of course, the now ubiquitous sheer or "naked" outfit. Let's take a look at some of the stand-out looks from the night.

Carey Mulligan

Maestro actress Carey Mulligan chose vintage Schiaparelli from 1949 for her red-carpet walk. The black floor-length gown had a dramatic fishtail silhouette, and the strapless sweetheart bodice was asymmetrically decorated with dripping gems for extra glitz.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone won an award for Poor Things. Her floor-length Louis Vuitton gown was in the "naked" style with a plunging neckline and sky-high thigh slit. The dress and flowing train were embellished with gorgeously embroidered flowers and foliage. She wore her hair in a sleek bob and minimal accessories to allow the dress to shine.

Natalie Portman

Actress Natalie Portman, who was nominated for her film May December, arrived on the red carpet in a fully sequinned Dior ballgown. The white scoop-necked bodice led into a flared skirt gradually sequinned in more densely packed colours, eventually creating a monet-esque flower garden at the bottom third of the dress.

Rosamund Pike

English actress Rosamund Pike, nominated for an award for Saltburn, gave a nod to the film in her dark gothic-style dress. The black lace Dior gown had a 50s-style silhouette, boned bodice, and mesh sleeves. She finished the look with black platform sandals and a dramatic lace veil by Philip Treacy.

Taylor Swift

Pop icon Taylor Swift showed up to the ceremony in a floor-length green Gucci sequinned bodycon dress with spaghetti straps and a low-cut back. She wore her hair in loose flowing waves and accessorised with sparkling De Beers diamond jewellery.
