The Costume Institute Gala, or Met Gala, is known as fashion's biggest night. It is held to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The event, organised by the fashion magazine Vogue, is held on the first Monday in May, and tickets are highly sought, the occasion being invitation only for that year's perceived most influential people in the fashion, film, television, music and other creative industries. Each year has a theme that dictates the formal attire's tone. This year the theme was "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty", intended to honour the deceased German designer's contributions to fashion. The choice, when announced, was heavily questioned due to Lagerfeld's controversial public comments on weight, race, sex, and the Holocaust. Nevertheless, the celebrities appeared on the red carpet in their droves to show off their interpretations of the theme. Let's take a look at some of the outfits that caught our attention.
Lagerfeld was known for transforming the fashion house Chanel into one of the most valuable brands and popularising the iconic double-C logo. He was also one of the most recognisable men in fashion, always wearing black and white, dark glasses, a ponytail, and fingerless gloves. Even his cat, Choupette, was famous. Black, white, and some (sometimes outrageous!) nods to Choupette were the most popular choices on the red carpet.
James McAvoy
Scottish actor James McAvoy wore custom Dunhill to the event. The black single-breasted jacket featured satin peak lapels for textural contrast and formal jetted pockets. The trousers were loose-fitting to balance his slim figure. He paired the suit with a wing-tip collar shirt and a black tie with tiny white polka dots. As his tribute to Lagerfeld, he sported a black fan, as Lagerfeld was known to be a big fan of a fan!
Taika Waititi
New Zealand director Taika Waititi arrived on the red carpet in an ankle-length gun-metal silk coat with an asymmetrical one-button closure and contrasting black peak lapels. The ivory silk lining of the jacket matched his loose-fitting ivory silk pyjama-like trousers. He finished the look with his nod to Largerfeld in the form of two long strings of pearls and a black tulle corsage.
Baz Luhrmann
Director Baz Luhrmann went all out for the theme, wearing Thom Browne. The asymmetrical black double-breasted jacket had white piping around the seams, slim-notch lapels, and pockets. Over his cropped black trousers, he also donned a black kilt with white piping. He paired the eccentric suit with a white spread-collar shirt and a complementary black tie.
Robert Pattinson
Batman actor Robert Pattinson also went for a more unusual suit, donning a navy blue single-breasted slim-fitting Dior creation, which featured their futuristic pleated drape coat that looks like a half-skirt peeking out from the bottom of the jacket. He completed the outfit with a plain white shirt fastened with a gold brooch rather than a tie and some bejewelled black dress shoes.
Jared Leto
Actor Jared Leto is known for his out-there Met Gala looks, and he certainly didn't disappoint this year! Leto arrived on the red carpet wearing a full furry white catsuit in hommage to Lagerfeld's cat Choupette. He later changed into a more conventional look but kept the Jared Leto flair with a black cape embellished on the shoulders with faux fur. As another nod to Lagerfeld, he also wore black leather fingerless gloves.
