The Met Gala 2024: Best Dressed Men

The Met Gala 2024: Best Dressed Men

The Met Gala takes place annually on the first Monday in May. It is a charity event known as the Costume Institute Benefit, often called the Oscars of Fashion. This year, it was held on the 6th of May to celebrate the Institution's upcoming exhibition, Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion. The exhibition, which opens on the 10th of May, features over two hundred and fifty historically significant pieces, referred to as the 'sleeping beauties' because they are too fragile to be worn. It includes an Elizabethan bodice and a silk satin ball gown from 1877. The guests' outfits were supposed to be inspired by the J.G. Ballard short story, 'The Garden of Time', which is intertwined with the exhibition's theme of the evolution of human history and the cycle of creation and destruction. Let's take a look at some of the guest's ensembles and how well they stuck to the theme.

Eddie Redmayne

British actor Eddie Redmayne wore a black and white blazer dress designed by Steve O Smith. The blazer was made of black wool mounted on sheer silk organza that could be seen in strategic cut-aways. Under the coat, Eddie donned a tulle skirt and a silk organza dickie with a drawing of a tie on it. He finished the look with black brogues.

Baz Luhrmann

Australian director Baz Luhrmann rocked the red carpet in a distressed pine-green suit. The jacket featured three-dimensional embroidered flowers embellished with jewels in the centres and raw hems on the buttonless front closure, lapels and bottom. He didn't wear a shirt and accessorised with a bead necklace and a gold chain featuring a native Australian boab tree.

Bad Bunny

Puerto Rican rapper, singer, and co-chair of this year's Met Gala, Bad Bunny donned a custom Maison Margiela suit by John Galliano. The suit had an inside-out appearance, showing off the intricate stitching that goes into assembling a suit. The navy wool jacket had black lapels, and the loose-fitting, straight-cut trousers featured a red satin stripe on the inseam. He also donned an enormous beret, tiny sunglasses, and goat-hoof-shaped shoes.

Josh O'Connor

At first glance, Challengers actor Josh O'Connor's suit appeared to be a classic black tuxedo and white dress shirt. However, the elongated split tails of his jacket, textured shirt, silver and jewelled bow tie, and floral-patterned boots gave the ensemble a whimsical feel.

Alton Mason

American model Alton Mason donned a Thom Brown tailcoat suit in black and white boucle. The straight-cut trousers had frayed, raw edges. He paired the suit with an unbuttoned white shirt and undone bowtie, showing off his chest, a matching quilted overcoat, and a black satin cummerbund. The flamboyant look was finished with black and white patent platform boots.
