The Olivier Awards, presented since 1976 as the Society of West End Theatre Awards but renamed in 1984 to honour the British actor Laurence Olivier, is an annual ceremony to recognise excellence in professional theatre in London. They are considered equivalent to Broadway's Tony Awards and France's Molière Award. This year, the awards were presented at the Royal Albert Hall on the 2nd of April, 2023. Three-time Olivier Award nominee Hannah Waddingham hosted the star-studded event. Celebrities flocked to the red carpet to show off their sartorial elegance. As well as the usual tuxedo, some of the men pushed the boat out with their colours and patterns. Here are a few of the outfits that caught our eye.
David Tennant
Doctor Who and Good Omens actor David Tennant seemed to be channelling his inner Crowley in a black shirt, skinny black satin tie, straight-cut black trousers and a head-turning long black and gold brocade jacket. He paired the look with black patent dress shoes and black and gold sunglasses to echo his jacket.
Mark Strong
Mark Strong, a prolific actor, rocked up to the event to present an award in a more traditional look than David's, but that still featured some beautiful modern details. The mismatched tuxedo featured black trousers and a luxurious midnight blue velvet jacket with deeply scooped black satin shawl lapels that complemented his pants and traditional black bow tie.
Callum Scott Howells
Welsh actor Callum Scott Howells, known for It's a Sin, arrived on the red carpet in an unusual outfit. Callum donned an oversized white short-sleeved shirt with two patch breast pockets. He tucked the shirt into a beige kilt with matching knee-high socks and finished the look with chunky white trainers and a flower brooch on his collar.
Layton Williams
Bad Education actor Layton Williams stood out in a black and grey checked double-breasted suit with loose-fitting trousers. The jacket's flap pockets were placed high up, shortening and widening the peak lapels. The jacket also featured an unusual ruffled white trim sewn onto a long piece of black material attached at the left shoulder that draped to the floor. He completed the modern look with black wrap-around sunglasses and heavy black boots.
Paul Mescal
Paul Mescal, known for Normal People, chose a more classic look for his walk along the red carpet. He donned a single-breasted slim-fitting black suit with a customary spread-collar white dress shirt. He added a contemporary twist with a floppy Lavallière-style bow tie.
