It's the return of the Cannes Film Festival (also known as Festival de Cannes) in 2022, and between Tuesday 17th May and Saturday 28th May 2022, many celebrities and stars of the film world will take to the red carpets that occur over the two weeks. This year also marks the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival, and with it being a significant number, we can expect many statement looks indeed. The opening days have definitely delivered in style, and we at A Hand Tailored Suit have selected some of the statement suits from the gentlemen of the red carpet so far.
Baptiste Giabiconi
When: 17th May 2022 - "Final Cut (Coupez!)" & Opening Ceremony Red Carpet
Model Baptiste Giabiconi sported a white monochromatic moment on the red carpet, wearing a two-piece white suit with a possible - yet subtle - grey undertone. His formal shirt is also white and designed with a covered button placket for a smooth finish. The narrow bow tie over the wing collar pairs with the suit well, the jacket itself constructed with peak lapels on the front and the classic welt/flapped pocket combination. The sleeves are finished with four-button cuffs and the trousers made with a subtle tapered hem, fitting over his boots.
Yassine Azzouz
When: 17th May 2022 - "Final Cut (Coupez!)" & Opening Ceremony Red Carpet
Also wearing white on the red carpet was actor and writer Yassine Azzouz, whose ensemble featured a textured double-breasted blazer and a sharp pair of black tuxedo trousers. A shawl collar leads down into the four-button front, the same style of button replicated in a smaller size on the four-button cuffs. Thin flapped pockets blend into the jacket front, whilst the shirt's double cuffs are fully on show. The black bow tie is worn in front of the classic collar, matching the trousers well and the sheen of them slightly strengthened through the satin side stripes.
Romain Duris
When: 17th May 2022 - "Final Cut (Coupez!)" & Opening Ceremony Red Carpet
Actor Romain Duris looked dapper in a black velvet evening attire on the red carpet for the opening night, wearing a three-piece number and accompanying black shirt and narrow tie. The waistcoat underneath is a low cut with a four-button front and single jet pockets either side, the hem curving quite prominently to create a sharp notched hem. The jacket is a one-button design with flapped pockets and contrasting silk/satin peak lapels, accessorised with a silver bejewelled brooch. Other details include slim-line trousers with a slight flare to the hem and four-button cuffs on the jacket sleeves.
Alessandro Borghi
When: 18th May 2022 - "The Eight Mountains (Le Otto Montagne)" Red Carpet
A dark blue double-breasted suit was the attire of choice for actor Alessandro Borghi on the second night of Cannes Film Festival. The jacket was made with six black buttons on the front to match the wide peak lapels, whilst the flapped pocket jets were cut in the contrasting black cloth too for design. The shoulders were rounded for extra height and a noticeable curve across the shoulder line, leading towards his white shirt collar and dusky pink bow tie. The sleeve cuffs featured five buttons, whilst the trousers were a straight cut with a centre crease and a break in the hem over his shoes.
Khaby Lame
When: 19th May 2022 - "Armageddon Time" Red Carpet
Social media personality Khaby Lame wore a statement look for this red carpet, consisting of a crisp white two-piece suit worn over his black covered button placket shirt and narrow bow tie. The jacket is finished with a smooth shawl lapel leading down into the one-button front and thin double jet pockets low down. With the centre front edges curving round into the straight hem, it sits over his slim trousers. These are cut with a defined centre crease on the front with the hem just above the tops of his shoes. Four-button cuffs are the style of choice on the jacket sleeves, outlined by the subtle showing of the shirt cuffs.
Lorenzo Zurzolo
When: 19th May 2022 - "Eo" Red Carpet
The red carpet suit of choice for Lorenzo Zurzolo was a double-breasted style in a very light pink colour. The jacket was worn with one button fastened out of the six on the front, whilst a wide welt pocket sat behind the peak lapels which were sharp and on point. Extra reinforced stitches were included along the edges of the lapels and matching fabric covered buttons on the cuffs. With the shoulders rounded and slightly tall, the trouser hems are flared out for a retro finish to the suit overall and the centre crease subtle yet refined.
Lee Jung-jae
When: 19th May 2022 - "Hunt" Red Carpet
Actor Lee Jung-jae opted for a more classic approach to the evening's red carpet, wearing a printed dinner jacket with the illusion of a holographic effect in the black garment. The shawl collar is narrow on the front, along with the flapped pockets below the waist that feature contrasting satin jets. Five-button cuffs were the style of choice on the sleeves as the trousers were a tapered finish at the ankle, sharpened through the centre creases on the front. His dress shirt included a wing collar for his bow tie, whilst the look was completed with the tall black cummerbund across the middle.
Idris Elba
When: 20th May 2022 - "Three Thousand Years Of Longing (Trois Mille Ans A T'Attendre)" Red Carpet
Producer and actor Idris Elba looked smart in a modern navy blue two-piece ensemble, styled with a white formal shirt underneath and tall black bow tie. The peak lapels are wide and contrasting in a black cloth to match the four fabric covered buttons on the front, positioned in the double-breasted form. Smaller versions of the buttons feature in a five-button arrangement on the sleeve cuffs, details that are noticed as he tucks his hands into the side trouser pockets. With a defined centre crease on the front of the trousers, they are also finished with flared hems to continue this retro silhouette, whilst the shoulder line is smooth for a sleek finish.
Numan Acar
When: 21st May 2022 - Celebration Of Women In Cinema Gala Hosted By The Red Sea International Film Festival
Actor and producer Numan Acar looked smart in a wine red two-piece with contrasting burgundy details through the shawl collar and single button on the front. The shoulders are well tailored to create a smooth shoulder line across the top, as the jacket front includes an angled welt pocket on the chest and two flapped pockets below the waist. The trousers are a slim fit, designed with a contrasting burgundy waistband and sharp centre creases down the front, leading down to the hem sitting on top of the shoes. The look is completed with a covered button placket black shirt and satin bow tie.
Frédéric Beigbeder
When: 21st May 2022 - "Triangle Of Sadness" Red Carpet - The 75th Annual Cannes Film Festival
Writer Frédéric Beigbeder also opted for a dark blue number for this particular red carpet at Cannes, wearing a two-piece suit with a formal white shirt, short collar and black bow tie. It's a slightly more relaxed approach with narrow notch lapels and a two-button front with the top button fastened. The welt pocket is angled on the chest as the two flapped pockets are on a straight angle below the waist. The cuffs are finished with four buttons whilst a matching blue belt is worn across the top of his slim trousers.
Vassili Schneider
When: 22nd May 2022 - "Forever Young (Les Amandiers)" Red Carpet
Attending the red carpet during the 6th day of the iconic film festival was actor Vassili Schneider who, for the red carpet, opted for a statement black long tailored coat. Worn over a pair of black velvet trousers with a wide leg, the coat itself falls to below the knee with a tall single vent on the back. Eight fabric covered buttons feature on the front of the double-breasted cut, matching the cloth of the wide peak lapels which have a subtle shimmer. Two vertical jet pockets are positioned hip-level on the coat as the shoulders are padded and the look completed with an accompanying black shirt and narrow black tie.
Tahar Rahim
When: 22nd May 2022 - "Forever Young (Les Amandiers)" Red Carpet - The 75th Annual Cannes Film Festival
Actor Tahar Rahim looked cool in an oversized and relaxed double-breasted black suit with a white pinstripe design across both the jacket and trousers. The jacket is strongly structured on the shoulders thanks to the padding, whilst the front is designed with peak lapels and a six-button front. The welt pocket on the chest is long and narrow, pattern-matched well with the cloth as two thin double jet pockets are positioned near the bottom. As the cuffs are finished in the classic four-button style, the trousers are a slightly relaxed cut with the hem falling over the shoe and just brushing the floor.
