The ninety-fifth Acadamy Awards, better known as the Oscars, took place on March 12th 2023, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood to honour the best movies released in 2022. Unusually, the Oscar's red carpet was not, in fact, red this year but a champagne colour! Nevertheless, stars flocked to it en masse in a wide array of opulent outfits for the biggest night in celebrity dressing.
For the women, white and black were the chosen colours of the evening, with minimalism being a key component. However, there were are few splashes of colour among the more muted looks. Here are a few of the outfits that caught our eye.
Rihanna
Superstar singer Rihanna, nominated for Best Original Song for Lift Me Up from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, rocked up on the "red" carpet in a design by Alaia. The black leather bra top had straps that wrapped around her neck and chest, connecting it to the trained and slashed floor-length leather skirt. Underneath, she wore a longsleeved sheer black body suit that hugged her pregnant belly and added a little modesty to the outfit. A messy high bun and a bold red lip finished the look beautifully.
Lady Gaga
Another iconic singer and nominee for Best Original Song for her track Hold My Hand, which appeared on the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, Lady Gaga, arrived in a sheer corseted Versace gown. The skirt was low-rise and had a belt emblazoned with Versace's Medusa logo. The back was very cheeky, fitting Gaga's personality well. Gaga accessorised with Tiffany & Co. jewellery, including platinum and diamond rings, a bracelet, and earrings. She completed her outfit with a bold red lip and smoky eye makeup to match the gothic feel of the dress.
Jennifer Connelly
Actress Jessica Connelly, one of the stars of the nominated film Top Gun: Maverick, ornamented the champagne carpet in a black Louis Vuitton strapless dress with a pyramid of rhinestones rising from the neckline on both front and back. The gown was a simple column shape with sharply cut fabric draped down both arms for added interest. Jennifer slicked her hair back and kept her accessories and makeup minimal for a polished effect and to allow the dress to shine.
Michelle Williams
At the ceremony, Michelle Williams, nominated for Best Actress in The Fabelmans, arrived in an all-white Chanel couture gown. The strapless floor-length dress featured an embellished bodice with a sheer overlay glittering with tiny crystals. She matched the crystals on her dress with a diamond choker and a more delicate necklace from Tiffany & Co. Like many others, Michelle added colour to the ensemble with a bright red lip.
Stephanie Hsu
Best Supporting Actress nominee for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Stephanie Hsu, also chose a strapless dress, this time by Valentino, and in a vivid pink hue. A large and pouffy ballgown-style skirt balanced the long structured bodice. She styled it simply with platinum and diamond drop earrings and a matching bracelet and wore her hair in loose waves.
Cara Delevingne
Model and Only Murders in the Building actress Cara Delevingne looked stunning on the champagne carpet in a dazzling red gown by Elie Saab. The one-shoulder dress featured a large statement bow accentuating the ruching on the bodice, and the full skirt included a floor-skimming train and daring thigh-high slit. She finished the look with sky-high peep-toe scarlet satin heels and diamond jewellery by Bulgari.
