Organised by La Biennale di Venezia, the Venice Film Festival aims to promote international cinema as an industry, as art, and as entertainment. It is the oldest film festival, and this year was its eighty-first outing, running from August 28th to September 7th, 2024. The honours are presented on the final day, September 7th, during the Awards Ceremony. This year, about twenty-one films are competing for the prestigious Golden Lion Award. Previous winners include Vera Drake, Brokeback Mountain,
The Wrestler, The Shape of Water, Joker, and Poor Things. In contention this year are some of the most highly anticipated movies: Joker: Folie à Deux, Queer, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Babygirl, and Wolfs. The competing films are screened, and the starring celebrities and other guests flock to the red carpets to show off their sartorial best. Let's take a look at some of the standout looks from this year's Venice Film Festival so far.
Julianne Moore
Julianne glittered in a gold sequinned Bottega Veneta gown and complementary statement earrings for the premiere of her film The Room Next Door.
Isabelle Huppert
French actress and festival judge Isabelle Huppert was very on-trend in her leopard print Balenciaga dress with an attached cape.
Michael Keaton
For the highly anticipated almost forty-year return of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton donned a midnight blue suit with a matching shirt and bow tie and luxurious contrasting satin shawl lapels.
Jenna Ortega
Jenna Ortega, who also stars in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, channelled the wedding scene of the original movie in a sheer red tulle two-piece custom Dior set and Dior Joaillerie jewellery.
Jude Law
Jude Law, whose film The Order premiered at the festival, chose a classic midnight blue suit with satin peak lapels for his red carpet appearance. However, he kept the look modern by foregoing the traditional shirt and tie, instead opting for a matching coloured vest and a loosely tied silk scarf.
Cate Blanchett
For the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Cate Blanchett wore a form-fitting tiered and strapless champagne dress by Armani Privé. Each tier was embellished along the seams with pearls that she complemented with a stunning pearl and diamond Louis Vuitton necklace draped across her shoulders.
Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig attended the screening of his film Queer in a casual slim-fitting cream suit with flap pockets and notch lapels. He kept the look relaxed by pairing it with a white shirt unbuttoned at the collar and no tie. He finished the outfit with pointed-toe brown dress shoes and sunglasses.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie strutted the red carpet of her movie Maria in a pinky-beige ruched custom gown by Tamara Ralph with a short train and a faux-fur stole decorated with a golden flower brooch. She added a pop of colour to the neutral look with a vivid red lip.
Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult, who also stars in The Order with Jude Law, attended the premiere in a gorgeous black slim-fitting suit with peak lapels. He paired it with a black horseshoe waistcoat that showed off his crisp white dress shirt with its black buttons and his traditional black bow tie.
Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton, whose movie The Room Next Door with Julianne Moore premiered at the festival, also attended the screening of Daniel Craig's Queer. She dressed in a long-sleeved mock-neck white Alaia dress that she accessorised with bright aqua-blue heels and a striking red lip.
