GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2021: The Stylish Guests - A Hand Tailored Suit

GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2021: The Stylish Guests

The GQ Men Of The Year Awards, in association with BOSS, kicked off its 24th annual event on Wednesday 1st September 2021 at the Tate Modern in London, hosted in the Turbine Hall. With all the guests and potential winners attending in person after the ceremony took place virtually in 2020, the awards honour some of the most notable names in the fashion, media, sport and culture and this year, also awarded those who were heroic during the pandemic. Of course, the red carpet was rolled out and at A Hand Tailored Suit, we have certainly kept on eye on some of the stylish guests who were there, with many guests wearing BOSS, starting with:

Idris and Sabrina Ellis

Husband and wife, Idris and Sabrina Ellis, were the joint hosts of this year's GQ awards and on the night. The suit was a two-piece black suit featuring the classic evening shawl collar and a single-button front. On the sleeves were 4-button cuffs as his jet pockets and welt pocket were very subtle against the suit. His shirt was also black with a slight spread collar and a black tie to add a hint of a relaxed style to his evening attire. The jacket's hem was rounded and the trousers sitting below the tops of his shoes, with the centre crease refining his suit more. Sabrina had two looks for the night, the first being a leopard print black velvet dress with a straight neckline and thigh-high slit down the side. Level with the sleeves/gloves, the hem of the dress sits above the floor, similar to her second dress of the night with a fitted bodice and low scooped neckline.

Regé-Jean Page

Actor Regé-Jean Page was awarded Standout Performance for his role in the Netflix series, "Bridgerton" and certainly delivered a dapper look wearing a green printed three-piece, think black tie and white shirt with a angled collar. His jacket is more of an overcoat style, with its broad padded shoulders, peak lapels and a 4-button front cut in the double-breasted style. The sleeves are just short to allow the shirt to stick through, whilst the flapped pockets and lapel pin are also featured. The trousers are tapered to sit level with his ankles and the side trouser pockets allows more of the single-breasted waistcoat to be exposed. The dapper finishing touch is the gold chain pocket watch tucked away in the waistcoat.

Paul Bettany

Actor Paul Bettany was awarded the Leading Man of the Year award as his choice of attire was a two-piece midnight blue suit. He wore a white dress shirt with blue dress studs as part of the look, whilst wearing a very dark blue bow tie to the suit. Contrasting notch lapels matched the bow tie, as the jacket was a two-button front with flapped pockets that were edged with a very dark blue contrasting jet. On the sleeves were 4-button cuffs and the trousers cut in a slim straight leg with the centre crease. The waistband too was made in a contrasting cloth to ensure this detail was noticed on this sophisticated suit.

Arlo Parks

Singer Arlo Parks was also a winner at the event, taking home the Deezer Breakthrough Music Artist award as she attended the opening red carpet wearing a cropped red jacket and straight-leg trousers with a loose fit on the legs. The jacket's details are subtle against the vibrant piece with two flapped pockets situated just below the waist and finished with a straight hem. On the shoulders, it appears that the singer could be wearing a red shirt underneath a red gilet through the shoulder's appearance, with the collar sitting over the top and the embellished brooch worn between the collar points to add a touch of sparkle for the evening event.

Ed Sheeran

Singer Ed Sheeran took home the award for Solo Artist at this year's GQ awards, and his attire was certainly a stand-out choice. The look was edgy with a vibrant printed dinner jacket with a metallic one-button front, a rounded hem exposing his belt buckle and pairing it with skinny black evening trousers, finished with the classic satin stripe down the side. The contrasting black details of the notch lapels, collar, welt pocket and double jet pockets are the perfect outline to the bright jacket, which also includes embellishments of different sizes and colour to showcase the glamour of Ed Sheeran's black tie ensemble. Underneath he wears a plain white shirt and black tie to complete the look.

Kingsley Ben-Adir

Winner of the BOSS Breakthrough Artist for the 2021 ceremony, actor Kingsley Ben-Adir rocked an evening brown velvet number for the black tie dress code. The jacket is a one-button fastening with four matching black buttons on the cuff, along with thin jet pockets sitting just below the waist and the brown angled welt pocket strengthened through the addition of his folded black pocket square. The sharp contrasting black peak lapels heighten the dapper look, as the actor's trousers are tapered to the ankle and finished with the black satin side stripe. Underneath is a shiny black shirt of choice to match the black bow tie and contrasting satin waistband on the trousers.

Charlotte de Carle

Presenter and DJ Charlotte de Carle opted for a sharp tailored ensemble on the night, wearing a two-piece orange suit with the trousers a lighter shade than the jacket. The trousers are tapered to the knee for a very wide flare at the turned-up hem. The embellishment down the centre front of the trousers are completely identical as the bottom part of the design is mirrored. The designs and prints on the jacket too are also symmetrical and mirrored for a touch of luxury on the long-length jacket. The two-button front is low cut, making way for the wide curved notch lapels and collar to suit the smooth texture of the cloth. Large flapped pockets hang over the bottom pattern slightly but not too much to distract from the print. With 4-button cuffs on the sleeve and structured shoulders, it's a strong style choice.

Erin O'Connor

Fashion model Erin O'Connor sported a luxurious three-piece purple velvet suit with gold details through her jewellery and buttons on the outfit. The jacket she wears draped over her shoulders for a chic finish as it includes a single-button fastening and soft peak lapels with extra stitching right on the edge, flapped pockets and four buttonholes on the cuffs. Her waistcoat is a single-breasted cut, designed with no lapels and a 5-button front with thin jet pockets just made visible as the light hits the material. The waistcoat is a notched hem, curving slightly to the hip and her trousers including front vertical pockets and a flared hem. The monochromatic ensemble with the draped jacket creates an elongated silhouette for her evening wear.

Richard Biedul

Model and creative director Richard Biedul was also in attendance at the 24th GQ Men of the Year Awards and looking class in a white shawl collar dinner jacket, designed with a round hem and thin jet pockets. With a single-button fastening too, the welt pocket holds a satin ivory/cream pocket square, exposed slightly for an extra finishing touch. The white dinner shirt is also the focus of his attire, made with ruffles that are edged in black for a modern look and to ensure this detail is not missed. Along with the black bow tie, a wide black cummerbund sits over his black trousers with the sharp centre crease at the front, creating a longer shape in the leg and a tall silhouette overall. His rounded cuffs on his shirt are just spotted underneath the jacket sleeve for a classic evening piece.
