Royal Ascot 2022: What the Ladies Wore

It was the return of the Royal Ascot last week as it took place over a five-day period between Tuesday 14th and Saturday 18th June 2022. As is made known before attending the Ascot Races, a dress code is adhered to, and this means we can always look forward to seeing what fine examples of tailoring and accessories the spectators would be wearing. Below are just a few of our favourite ensembles as worn by the ladies at this year's Royal Ascot.

When: Day One at Royal Ascot (14th June 2022)

Wearing a stand-out outfit on the opening day of Royal Ascot this year was Kate Waterhouse, as the outfit echoed a recognisable vintage tailored silhouette. The circle skirt worn was cream in colour and knee-length, finished with box pleats to continue this delicate yet structured theme. The shirt was crisp white and designed with a tall collar that could sit slightly over the jacket's centre front, just as it has done here. This leads to the jacket itself, created with a fitted waistline that would slightly flare out and give it a bit of a peplum feel. Two diamond shapes (gold and silver) sat behind the vertical silver poles with a chunky chain across the centre to fasten the jacket in place. The shoulders were the talking point thanks to the extra padding and the exposed seams creating right angles on the boxy shoulders.

Presenter Maya Jama looked summery for the summer Royal Ascot event wearing a pink and red printed ruffled gown. It was designed with long sleeves that were finished with subtle flared cuffs and a ruffled panel that draped across the top of the gown. The collar was tall to balance out the voluminous ruffled hem across this section, whilst the red of the bodice was fitted before leading into the many layered ruffles on the skirt. Five separate layers in total were added onto the skirt, showing a soft gradient from the light pinks to a darker shade of red pink at the bottom.

When: Day Two at Royal Ascot (15th June 2022)

Spotted on day two wearing a black polka dot ruffled gown was model Eunice Olumide, who styled the dress with a tailored black blazer over the top and cinched in with a black belt across the waist. The hem of the gown was asymmetric thanks to the textures that were involved in the gown, which acted as a great contrast with throwing a piece of tailoring over the top. The peak lapels were wide and certainly finished to a point as the pocket flaps below the belt were smoother and rounded. With padded shoulders and a rounded hen, the sleeves were constructed with five shank buttons on the cuffs to act as a chic detail on their own.

Dancer Oti Mabuse stunned in green for the summer event wearing a below-the-knee length wrap dress. A lovely mid-green shade in colour, the dress included a small V-neck with the bodice wrapping around to the waist. On the waist was a horizontal section running across, leading into a big double bow just positioned to her right for decoration. The sleeves were long and the shoulders fitted with a soft finish to mirror the satin shine and natural drape of the material. She accessorised with a bright pop of pink through her brimmed hat.

This was presenter Charlotte Hawkins' second Ascot look of the event, wearing a red and blue printed knee-length dress with an accompanying fabric hat. It had a certain vintage feel to the gown thanks to its pleated skirt and button fastening leading all the way from the collar down to the hem. The sleeves were slightly loose but gathered into the short cuffs to create that subtle fullness near the bottom, whilst the shoulder seams appear to be slightly gathered. The collar was left open and a red belt was worn across the waist to stand out against the navy blue botanical print behind it.

When: Day Three at Royal Ascot (16th June 2022)

Millinery is always a talking point of the Royal Ascot Fashion, and milliner Victoria Grant donned her own magenta pink design with Merry Widow veiling with a grass green suit. The jacket was double-breasted with four matching fabric-covered buttons on the front, complete with two flapped pockets positioned very near the jacket hem. The lapels were notched and quite wide across the front, emphasised through the collar which stood tall around the neck. The shoulders were softly tailored down to the cuffs, whilst her trousers were fitted to the knee with a flared hem at the bottom. The front centre crease of the trousers are definitely prominent, adding to the sharpness of the tailoring and the vividness of the colours in the ensemble.

When: Day Four at Royal Ascot (17th June 2022)

Creative director and stylist Susan Bender Whitfield wore a printed light pink two-piece suit for the penultimate day of the calendar event. Her jacket was a double-breasted cut with four large gold buttons on the front. From afar, they blend quite seamlessly into the suit because of its summery palette; yet the vivid orange and golden yellow helps to distinguish them on the front. Notch lapels were included on the top and the shoulders slightly rounded for an extra bit of height. Two flapped pockets were positioned below the waist and the trousers were a slim, straight-leg cut with a centre crease and the hem sitting over her heels.

When: Day Five at Royal Ascot (18th June 2022)

Former boxer Nicola Adams' attire was also a double-breasted suit, cut from Black Watch tartan and styled with a white buttoned shirt with a fastened collar. The jacket itself includes a four-button front with a flapped pocket either side, finished with four smaller fabric covered buttons on the jackets. The peak lapels were wide and lay flat against the jacket front for a seamless finish, whilst the angled welt pocket on the chest is pattern-matched for this effect too. The shoulders are well-tailored with structure and the jacket hem cut straight, just as the trousers are too for a strong tailored look on the final day of Ascot.
