The 2022 Academy Museum Gala: The Stylish Gentlemen - A Hand Tailored Suit

The 2022 Academy Museum Gala: The Stylish Gentlemen

This year marked the second time the Academy Museum Gala took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Los Angeles on Saturday 15th October 2022. Attending the gala were some of the most in-demand names in Hollywood right now, along with some other well-known stars who would be there to celebrate once year since its opening, and to help raise money for many exhibitions to come later in the future. Of course, this event meant glitz, glamour and sartorial style with the dress code, and we've selected just a few of our favourite attires from the stylish gentlemen who were there.

Attending with his wife Amal Clooney, actor George Clooney looked very suave in a classic three-piece evening suit for this year's gala, donning a single-breasted jacket cut and waistcoat underneath. The jacket was finished with contrast satin peak lapels that would echo the side stripes on his evening trousers, whilst the garment was fastened with a single button on the front and a clean front without noticeable pockets. The cuff's four buttons were overlapping and the hem of the garment was quite tall thanks to the fastening, allowing the waistcoat to sit high on the chest and be noticed underneath. Fastened with five buttons itself, it also included a notched hem and a plain neckline to maintain this smooth finish, worn over a crisp white evening shirt and a black bow tie around the slightly wide collar to finish.

Looking timeless in a white dinner jacket was actor Jay Ellis, who sported the garment with a black studded evening dress shirt underneath and a pair of slim black trousers. The peak lapels would be finished in a contrast satin facing to allow for that subtle distinction against the matte cloth of the jacket itself, this finish also picked out through the double pocket jets lower down. Two buttons were included on the front with smaller versions on the cuffs as the shoulders were softly padded for that elegant tailored line. As a black bow tie was the perfect choice for the neck accessory, the sharp pleats of the evening shirt would be a nice little juxtaposition indeed to the attire.

Sterling K. Brown

Looking sharp and dapper was actor Sterling K. Brown who opted for a double-breasted number for this year's gala as he attended with his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe. The actor's jacket itself was a six-button front with gold button to enhance that luxurious nature, a detail picked out further through the addition of the lapel brooch and chain hanging over the lapel. The lapels were of a peak design with contrast satin lines woven in as they are on the collar, adding that extra level of definition. The same detail is also spotted on the sleeves high above the cuffs, whilst two flapped pockets and a welt pocket are included on the front. His trousers are a slim-cut with the classic centre crease on the front leading into the hem, sitting just on the shoes. A classic white shirt and narrow black tie are worn underneath to complete the attire.

Brooklyn Beckham

Photographer and media personality Brooklyn Beckham rocked up in a sleek, minimal suiting attire to this year's Academy Museum Gala with his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham. His white shirt was fully fastened and styled without a neck accessory to achieve that minimal look, the slightly narrow placement of the collar bringing that evening sharpness. This was echoed through the low contrast peak lapels which were quite modern through the elongation and overlap of the matte collar. Single jet pockets were the preferred style below the waist, sitting just below the silver bar fastening on the centre. The notched hem was finished with sharp lines as the jacket sat over the straight-leg trousers, a centre crease subtle on the front and the hem sitting over the shoe to cause a break above the ankle.

Joe Jonas

Spotted with his wife, Sophie Turner, at this year's gala was singer/songwriter Joe Jonas, whose certainly stood out amongst the rest. The ensemble consisted of a short jacket and trousers with this snakeskin-style finish, heavily printed with a variety of colours and prints on both pieces. The jacket appeared to have its peak lapels almost sewn down or outlined through stitch/print along the neckline, picking out the red lines across the shoulders. Flapped pockets were positioned near the bottom, again with this subtle pop of red creeping through to outline this detail. Just like the trousers, an enlarged print of what appears to be a belt buckle and holes are seen on the one side, whilst the other side replicates what could be an enlarged printed zip in its gold/orange tones. The centre creases are defined in black to give added shape to the trousers, whilst the hems just brush the tops of his shoes.

Colman Domingo

Looking cool in a timeless black evening suit with a bit of flare was actor Colman Domingo. The jacket was cut with notch lapels leading down into the distinctive one-button front sitting level on the waist, creating this high-waisted and elongated finish in the overall silhouette. The jet pockets underneath were narrow with the welt pocket hiding behind the one lapel for a smooth finish. Whilst the shoulder line was padded and slightly rounded for extra height, the cuffs would be quite noticeable too thanks to the contrast stitching detailing that featured, linking nicely to the actor's evening shirt. The trousers were a straight-leg cut, leading down into a long line whose hem would finish over the trousers with a slight flare to the hemline. Accessorising with a tall black bow tie on the collar, it certainly encapsulated a vintage style to the suit cut.

Spike Lee

Pictured with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, film director and producer Spike Lee rocked up in a double-breasted attire with its own subtle pop of detail. The classic black evening suit with elevated through the use of bright orange buttons on the front in its six-button arrangement, two of the fastened to really enhance the tailored lines. Four smaller versions were included on the jacket cuffs, as extra classic details included flapped pockets below the waist and a welt pocket sitting behind the one peak lapel. The shoulders were slightly rounded for extra height and definition, whilst the white shirt's double cuffs were showing prominently through the jacket sleeves to echo his glasses and showcase the shirt further. A midnight blue tie was worn underneath the classic collar and his straight-leg trousers were cropped above the boots.

Adrien Brody

Adding another sharp suit to his collection at this year's gala was actor Adrien Brody, who donned a black two-piece attire with a black dress shirt underneath. The sheen finish of the shirt was mirrored through the contrast peak lapels and jacket collar, the lapels themselves quite tall on the front. A welt pocket was left as is on the front, whilst two buttons made for the fastening and the flapped pockets were almost level with the bottom button. The cuffs were designed in the classic four-button arrangement and the jacket hem was finished with a lovely curved edge to signify the elegance of the event. His pleated front trousers were a slim cut with a slight tapered hem and centre creases maintaining the sharpness of the ensemble, before finishing with a contrast satin waistband that was of significant height. For the accessory, a small bow tie was worn underneath the standard shirt collar to complete the look.

Along with these sartorial looks, we also loved these outfits below as worn by more famous faces that were in attendance. Which look was your favourite from this year's gala?
