The 2022 Academy Museum Gala: The Stylish Ladies

This year marked the second time the Academy Museum Gala took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Los Angeles on Saturday 15th October 2022. Attending the gala were some of the most in-demand names in Hollywood right now, along with some other well-known stars who would be there to celebrate once year since its opening, and to help raise money for many exhibitions to come later in the future. Of course, this event meant glitz, glamour and sartorial style with the dress code, and we've selected just a few of our favourite attires from the stylish ladies who were there.

Barrister Amal Clooney brought elegance and vintage class to the gala this year as she attended the event with her husband, George Clooney. She wore a strapless sweetheart neckline floor-length gown in various shades of green. With a slight keyhole design on the bodice, it was fitted to the waist with the cream and green panelling angling inwards to enhance this silhouette further, before delicately draping down to the floor with texture and ruffles adding more dimension. The extra diagonal sections on the bodice almost reflect a Grecian-style dress, with the sharpness of those toned down through the softness of the green and cream colours.

Dazzling at the gala was actress Thuso Mbedu who wore a pastel, muted tone top paired with a soft textured skirt. The top itself was long-sleeved and with a classic crew neckline across the top, whilst the intricate floral details tone down the slightly structured shoulders. Cropped to the waist with a subtle curved hemline, it allows the white train puffy skirt to really have its own moment too, particularly through the layering to create this elegant structure that flows down to the long train behind. With a knee-length hem at the front, it's a contrast in the skirt itself as the top contrasts the skirt too, creating such a graceful ensemble.

Bringing a statement to the gala also was actress Jodie Turner-Smith, who donned a green V-neck floor-length gown that really captured the old Hollywood glamour. The shade of green itself was more on the aquamarine/turquoise colour spectrum, this beautifully picked out through the soft blue feather trim on the flared sleeves and hem at the bottom. To heighten the glamour further, the gown was embellished with silver/gold lace appliqués in various places, including one on the black necklace to really tie it all together.

Selma Blair

Looking so chic and smart in was actress Selma Blair, keeping it quite fitting with the black tie dress code by wearing a crew neck dress underneath a matching cropped blazer. The dress itself was a midi length design with a hint of the A-line silhouette from the waist down. Many bows and silver jewels formed the main decorations of the gown, details that were mirrored on the blazer and a couple placed where the buttonholes/buttons would be. The notch lapels were short and the shoulders were softly padded to keep that tailored line across the top, leading into the half-length sleeves whose hem was finished with great refinement for that sharp finish.

Julia Roberts

Actress Julia Roberts' attire was certainly quite modern but defined as she donned a black corset bodice and skirt to the gala, styled over a white shirt and a black blazer draped over the shoulders. The blazer itself was designed with wide notch lapels that had the outer edges finished with binding, as too did the collar and patch pocket on the chest. With a white pocket square in this welt pocket, two larger patch pockets were situated at the bottom of the jacket, again with a contrast bound edge at the top to differentiate between the textures. As the shoulders were padded, the shirt was designed with subtle wide stripes and a wide collar, finished with a silver gem brooch in-between. The corset bodice was sharp with its straight neckline and channels leading into the waistband of the skirt, falling to the floor and cut with a subtle flare to contrast the fitted top half of the silhouette.

Sporting something different yet very much a powerful outfit was actress Sophie Turner, who attended the gala with her husband, Joe Jonas. The attire consisted of a panelled dress and delicate lace tights with a statement brown jacket over the top. Being the same length as the dress underneath, the jacket was designed with a statement contrast shawl collar, slightly wider at the bottom and with a champagne gold quilted facing outlined in dark brown. The buttons were significantly large to mirror the effect of the jacket, with a button on each of the large patch pocket flaps. The pocket flaps were also finished in the same brown edging as the collar, matching that panelling down the centre front, across the shoulders and the tall sleeve cuffs. The cut of the blazer came in at the waist for that sharp fitted finish, something that is strengthened through the strong tailored lines across the shoulders and of the panelled construction itself, making it a defining outfit at the gala.

Michelle Yeoh

Transporting a shirt dress to an elegant level was Michelle Yeoh, wearing a long-sleeved monochrome black floor-length gown to the gala. The neckline was that of a classic shirt with the button placket acting as a decorate panel itself whilst leading into the gathered waistband. The sleeves would match as they were cut from the same black cloth and styled with one cuff rolled up and the other left as is. Down the front of the gown from the shoulders down to the hem, a floral lace panel would glisten under the evening light and camera with the sequins showcasing this subtle glimmer.

Jessica Chastain

Attending the gala in an effortless gown was actress Jessica Chastain, whose outfit was very artistic through the delicate and detailed floral printed fabric that went into its construction. The gown itself was a subtle sweetheart neckline with a fitted waist bodice before leading down into a soft, pleated skirt which brushed the floor with grace. Across the shoulders and down, the actress would wear a matching cape that would float behind as she moved, the skirt and cape itself almost blending into one through the movement. The cape would also act as a fabric train to the overall outfit, making it a gorgeous gala ensemble.

Along with these stunning looks, we also loved these attires below as worn by more famous faces that were in attendance. Which look was your favourite from this year's gala?
