2021 Venice Film Festival: Gentlemen of the Red Carpet

The 2021 Venice International Film Festival is almost at a close for what has been another successful year, celebrating just over 90 films and many famous faces attending the premiere's. It was the 78th year of the prestigious event that has taken place between Wednesday 1st September and ends on Saturday 11th September 2021 which, during the 11-day festival, has seen many eye-catching red carpet looks. Let's look back at some of the most dapper looks the gentlemen of the red carpet have worn:

When: 3rd September 2021 - "The Lost Daughter" Red Carpet

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal attended the red carpet in a dapper and crisp Valentino two-piece suit, styled with a white shirt designed with a covered button placket down the centre. He wears the shirt open collar to match the relaxed vibe this look presents,. The jacket itself is a double-breasted cut with peak lapels to balance the structured shoulders with an angled seam line. The flapped pockets are straight and sharp with slight rounded edges as the four-button front is a defining detail on the centre, matching the buttons on the 3-button cuffs. The hem is a straight base, complimenting the centre line on the front of the trousers which are also a relaxed shape. Side seam pockets are used by the actor to enhance the cool red carpet vibe of this look.

When: 2nd September 2021 - "The Power Of The Dog" Red Carpet

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch sported a blue dinner suit very dark in colour as it was designed with contrasting black details on the collar, pockets and buttons. Styling his crisp white shirt with a tie to match the collar, the jacket included a lovely tailored line on the shoulders, finished with a rounded edge for extra shape as it leads down to the 4-button cuffs. The pockets are double jets and the jacket fastened with the one button as per dinner jacket style, with the shawl collar leading into a harsh curved edge at the bottom that provides the overall suit with an extra edge. Side pockets are included on the trousers and the hem just touching the tops of his shoes.

When: 1st September 2021 - Opening Ceremony and "Madres Paralelas" Red Carpet

Editor-in-chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, was spotted during the opening day of the 2021 Venice International Film Festival wearing a black three-piece and a white shirt featuring a thin band collar for a subtle finish. His waistcoat has a high neckline and very small notched hem, fastened with a five-button front all covered in fabric just as the jacket buttons are. Notch lapels, flapped pockets and a sharp welt pocket are included in the suit as the editor's trousers are straight-cut with the centre crease. The hem falls on top of his loafers but not so much as to take attention away from the gold embellishment, a subtle finishing touch to the sophisticated attire.

Lorenzo Zurzolo

When: 5th September 2021 - "Kineo Prize" Red Carpet

Actor Lorenzo Zurzolo went full Gucci in his red carpet attire during the fifth day of the film festival. The outfit consisted jacket and trouser separates, with a purple pussybow blouse acting as a great piece to link the black jacket and sage green trousers together. The jacket itself is designed with wide notch lapels and a two-button front, with a noticeable detail being the textured embellishment on the lapels and collar, down the centre front and along the pockets. The flapped pockets sit on a slight angle and the jacket cuffs finished with three buttons. With the jacket's padded shoulders and curved hem front, it compliments the soft look of the flared trousers. The hem just brushes the floor and the purple shirt cuffs just show through the ends of the jacket sleeves for a subtle glamour touch.

When: 2nd September 2021 - "The Card Counter" Red Carpet

Actor Oscar Isaac's choice of attire for this red carpet was a white dinner jacket and black tuxedo trousers, worn with a hooked bow tie and white dinner shirt. His jacket is made with a double vent, fastened with the traditional one-button front and styled with a lovely smooth shawl collar which is designed itself with what appears to be printed writing on it, same as the shirt. It also includes flapped pockets and a 4-button cuff to keep it classic. The shirt's collar is folded up and standing upright to contrast the soft texture of the jacket with a strong shape across the top. The trousers feature the satin stripe down the side and the hem sitting on top of the shoe with breaks in the item for an overall classic evening look.

Nicholas Hoult

When: 4th September 2021 - "Competencia Oficial" Red Carpet

The actor Nicholas Hoult attended this red carpet wearing a dapper Giorgio Armani double-breasted number, styled with a black evening shirt underneath. On the jacket are subtle, rounded shoulders and wide contrasting satin peak lapels to create a statement formal look. The jacket is a four-button front with the buttons matching the lapels, the same on the 4-button cuffs whilst the welt pocket and thin double jet pockets blend into the main cloth. The trousers are a slim cut to suit the sleek silhouette of the suit overall, not forgetting the satin side stripe to add extra shine. His evening shirt is modern, designed with a pleated button placket down the front and acting as a statement detail itself for a sartorial evening look.

Alessandro Borghi

When: 2nd September 2021 - "The Hand Of God" Red Carpet

Another example of a dapper evening look was worn by actor Alessandro Borghi, wearing a double-breasted Gucci suit worn over a white shirt. The shirt was worn open collar to add a small casual but cool finish to the occasion wear, the cuffs showing slightly as the actor moves on the red carpet. Focusing on the jacket, it is a burgundy number with contrasting wide black peak lapels to balance the shoulderline, whilst matching the black buttons down the front and cuffs. It is a six-button front and a 4-button cuff, with the jets on the flapped pockets another contrasting detail. There is an extra ticket pocket above one of the flapped pockets to elevate the suit, the sharp hem line sitting nicely on the straight leg evening trousers with the side satin stripe.

When: 4th September 2021 - "Last Night In Soho" Red Carpet

Michael Ajao's red carpet suit was a cool navy blue two-piece Ozwald Boateng choice, styled with a white buttoned shirt, black tie and extra metallic accessories of the tie clip and lapel pin. The jacket is a notch lapel design sitting high on the chest, with the structured shoulders matching the sleek lines of the suit overall. A one-button design, the flapped pockets are angled and curved against the body, leading round to the double vent on the back. The curved hem allows the slender trouser silhouette to be enhanced more as the centre creases down the front lead into a hem just sitting on his shoes. With a 4-button cuff formation for extra formality, it's a cool modern red carpet piece.
