Cannes Film Festival: Ladies of the Red Carpet - A Hand Tailored Suit

Cannes Film Festival: Ladies of the Red Carpet

The Cannes Film Festival - Festival de Cannes - is one of the most prestigious and glamorous red carpet events in the year, seeing many famous faces turn up to attend the premieres of many films shown throughout the duration. Like the majority of red carpet events, it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic; but this year it really has come back with a bang with the fashion that has been worn so far. Between Tuesday 6th July and Saturday 17th July 2021, we've seen many celebrities take to the red carpet at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (there's simply so many to choose from, spoilt for choice!) and at A Hand Tailored Suit, we've selected some of our favourite looks from the ladies of the red carpet so far.

When: 12th July 2021 - "The French Dispatch" Red Carpet

Model Iris Law attended the red carpet in an elegant and Grecian style ivory dress, with a low V-neck which finishes on the high waist included in the garment. From the shoulders are an additional tie detail which loops through the chiffon fabric in the centre, draping down her arms for an extra elegant touch. The fabric is beautifully gathered into the waistband as it then pleats out straight to the floor, creating lovely movement on the red carpet. With a plunging back finishing the silhouette off overall, it's such a simple yet gorgeous outfit to fit the glamour of Cannes.

When: 6th July 2021 - "Annette" and the Opening Day of Cannes Red Carpet

She's had famous moments on the red carpet before at Festival de Cannes and this was another one, as the model wore a chic black-and-white Jean Paul Gautier floor-length gown. The white dress is designed with a low scooped line, defined by the natural drapes of the black sheer fabric wrapped around the neck for a cross wrap design. As the top of the dress falls down to the middle of the back, an additional black sheer fabric train is included in the design which again, displays its natural drape. It is a minimal and chic ensemble which definitely stands out on the famous red carpet.

When: 8th July 2021 - "Stillwater" Red Carpet

Actress Jodie Turner-Smith dazzled in a Gucci strapless red carpet gown with a panelled corset bodice and feathered skirt which transitioned from white into a yellow feather train. The bodice was designed with a sweetheart necklace and embellished with crystals which matched her glistening jewellery perfectly, whilst the bottom of the gown was soft and delicately textured, creating a lovely balance to the outfit. It was one of a few outfits she looked great in at this year's festival so far, including a glistening black and purple gown at the Women's In Motion Dinner (11th July 2021) and a blush pink Gucci suit with a corset bodice. The suit was a double-breasted two piece number, with the jacket constructed in a six-button front, high-waisted trousers, padded shoulders and wide peak lapels: a sharp suit to contrast the lace bodice in the matching colour.

When: 9th July 2021 - "Benedetta" Red Carpet

Producer Tonya Lewis Lee attended the premiere of the film "Benedetta" wearing a glamorous red Valentino gown with a small train draping from the back of the dress. The neckline is a plunging V-neck which falls into the gathered centre panel on the waist, causing the top of the skirt to gather slightly also. From the top of the skirt is a thin vertical gathered section with soft, diagonal pleats that fall elegantly down to the bottom of the dress and into the hem of the garment for a smooth finish, an overall sophisticated red dress for the red carpet. It''s complimented well with the red buttons on her husband's (Spike Lee) double-breasted jacket too.

When: 8th July 2021 - "Stillwater" Red Carpet

Fashion influencer and blogger Leonie Hannes dazzled in a holographic Tony Ward couture gown attending the "Stillwater" premiere at Cannes Film Festival. In the lights, hints of green, purple and pink could be seen shining in the pleated fabric as the one-shoulder gown was also embellished to add to the glistening effect. The gown was pleats all the way down to the floor and with multiple layers included, the illumination of the fabric was captured from every angle as the dress moved, a heavenly design.

Actress Kat Graham has also worn two glamorous looks at Festival de Cannes 2021 so far, the first being a strapless Etro green gown and the second being a long-sleeve white dress from Boss. Her first gown was an emerald green gown with a paisley print in the cloth, finished with a vast array of embellished stones and crystals across the dress. The slit skirt adds a modern edge to the red carpet attire whilst the bodice is heavily embellished is matching emerald green stones to create almost a separate "V" shaped panel on the front. Down the centre of the green embellishments are further silver crystals in the style of a laced-up corset/bodice. Her second dress is a monochromatic, elegant piece, designed with long sleeves and a plunging V-neck surrounded by a few soft pleats into the waist. From the waist is a centre panel draping down to the floor, with soft pleats again draping out from the waist into the slit skirt.

The bodice itself it finished with black trim and tied in a small bow on the right with the ends draping down the side of the jacket. The jacket is cropped in a double-breasted cut with embellished buttons to match the overall design with soft shoulders, no lapel and a straight hem. The jacket is a great height to define the high-waisted embellished trousers, cut in a straight and wide leg with the hem slightly brushing the floor for an elongated look. The layering of black crystals draping down to the back gives a modern edge to a sophisticated suiting number.
