The award ceremonies continue with the infamous MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, at the Barclays Center in New York on Sunday 12th September 2021. The awards see high-profile celebrities of the music world await to see if they have won an award in categories such as Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Collaboration and many more; but as the red carpet was rolled out before the awards were handed out, there certainly were some stand-out fashion moments. Here are some of the sharp, cool looks from the gentlemen of the red carpet at this year's VMAs, starting with:
Shawn Mendes
Nominated for Song of the Summer and Best Pop, Canadian singer Shawn Mendes attended in an relaxed and oversized white suit from Mans. Wearing a white ribbed top underneath with a low mid-chest neckline, the jacket was cut in a double-breasted form with six fabric covered buttons on the front. The notch lapels are a casual touch with flapped pockets low down on the jacket but a feature to note are the 8-button cuffs on the sleeves. The top was left untucked as the trouser waistband is finished with belt loops and a longer fastening. The silhouette of them are very relaxed and wide legged thanks to the pleating enhancing the shape. The natural draping of the material also provides a wider shape as folds are made near the bottom of the hem draping on the floor, an overall cool and casual attire.
Ozuna
Puerto Rican singer Ozuna's red carpet attire was quite dapper as the artist performed his song "La Funka" at this year's awards. The Dolce & Gabbana ensemble featured a shimmery gold single-breasted jacket with contrasting wide peak lapels and the same material bound around the edge of the collar for extra edge to the look. Other details include a two-button front made from fabric covered buttons, two flapped pockets and the ticket pocket on his right side, all made with contrasting black jets too. With 3-button cuffs also included, the jacket is long in the body and his trousers slim, with the hem finishing at the ankle and the centre crease extra sharp. Underneath he wears a high neck gold sheer top, a different texture to the jacket but working together for a subtle, glistening event piece.
Jack Harlow
American rapper Jack Harlow stood out on the red carpet wearing a two-piece green Tommy Hilfiger number, styled casually with a pair of thick black boots and a chunky dark green sole. Performing later in the show with Lil Nas X, the rapper's jacket had a notch lapels, flapped pockets and four black buttons on the cuffs to match the single button fastening on the front. The pocket flaps indicate a subtle hint of red and his trousers are a flat front but slim fitting with a break near the bottom of the hem. The casual style is highlighted through the pairing of his black roll neck knit left untucked over the waistband as the rapper works his attire on the carpet with style.
Lil Nas X
Winner on the night of Video of the Year, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects with his song "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)", American rapper Lil Nas X's red carpet looks was defining. The lilac suit was a modern piece, designed with an off-shoulder feature wrapping round his waist into what is a matching long train behind him. The jacket is made with soft peak lapels to contrast the heavy embellishment seen all the way through the look, the element of a rounded flapped pocket seen and a structured right shoulder for extra drama. The trousers are spotted with a slight flare to the hem and designed with an embellished side stripe down each leg. On the back of the jacket is a unique lace-up section as the folds of the train are seen further from the back too for this iconic piece.
Conor McGregor
Former UFC and Irish boxer Conor McGregor was in attendance at this year's VMAs as he presented an award on-stage wearing a bright fuchsia pink blazer, styled with a pair of black evening trousers and dress shirt. The jacket itself was a shawl collar design and a two-button fastening, the matching buttons on the 4-button cuffs as an unique detail on their own. Soft shoulders and a curved hem contrast the overall sharp look as it also includes two flapped pockets and a third ticket pocket on the right side. The trousers are tapered as the sharp centre crease contrast the smooth waistband and his ruffled dress shirt, worn open collar and the cuffs showing underneath the jacket. The dapper attire was complete with his gold and black cane, the unmissable black pocket square in the top pocket and metal cufflinks.
Giveon
American singer Giveon was nominated for Song of the Summer and Best R&B with his track "Heartbreak Anniversary" at the awards and on the red carpet, brought a subtle element of smart/casual wearing a Valentino ensemble. With peak lapels and a four-button front, the double-breasted jacket included a soft shoulder line leading down to the buttons on his cuffs. The traditional flapped pockets were included in the design as a subtle flower piece is embroidered into the jacket and a similar design down the side of his left leg. The jacket hem is a straight cut and the shorts a wide fit on the legs but also sharp too through the hem and centre crease. Styled with a plain crew neck shirt underneath and the cuffs ever so slightly showing underneath the jacket sleeves, it's a minimal piece with sharp tailored elements on the red carpet.
FINNEAS
American singer/songwriter was pictured with his sister (Billie Eilish) at the VMAs wearing a smart double-breasted Vivienne Westwood number. The dark green velvet piece included soft peak lapels to balance the padded shoulders and a darker contrasting collar to match the buttons. It's a six-button front with three buttons fastened on the cuffs and the classic elements of flapped pockets and a straight hem finishing the jacket off. His trousers are cut in the same green velvet as the straight leg piece falls to finish on the ankle for an edgier finish. His dress shirt is a crisp white piece designed with a covered button placket for a smooth finish, the metallic collar button being a feature of the item for an overall cool, sharp look.
Iann Dior
Puerto Rican rapper Iann Dior was spotted at the awards as a song he featured on titled "Mood" by 24Goldn featuring himself, was nominated for Best Collaboration. His suit of choice was an all-purple number as he wore a purple roll neck underneath. The entire suit shows many shades of purple, blending from one hue to another to make it a stand-out piece. The jacket is made with notch lapels, a two-button front, flapped pockets and 5-button cuffs. The welt pocket is angled and the shoulders structured but slightly long for a broader look. The trousers are slim and the centre crease sharp to enhance the multiple tones of purple included and the hem sitting high on the shoes. It's a cool finish indeed.
