The award ceremonies continue with the infamous MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, at the Barclays Center in New York on Sunday 12th September 2021. The awards see high-profile celebrities of the music world await to see if they have won an award in categories such as Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Collaboration and many more; but as the red carpet was rolled out before the awards were handed out, there certainly were some stand-out fashion moments. Here are some of the most spectacular looks from the ladies of the red carpet at this year's VMAs, starting with:
Camila Cabello
Cuba-American singer Camila Cabello's red carpet gown was certainly spectacular as she wore a pink and red piece from Alexis Mabille. Nominated for Song of the Summer with her track "Don't Go Yet", the defining feature of the gown is the structured red bow in the centre, lined with the matching pink on the bodice. Its structure is complimented through the silky texture of the strapless gown, the bodice itself fitted like a corset with a lace-up back. The red skirt falls to the floor and provides natural folds too, leaving behind a subtle red train as she walks along the red carpet that also portrays elements of pink underneath the skirt - a glamorous choice.
Olivia Rodrigo
American singer Olivia Rodrigo's red carpet attire was a strapless floor-length gown from Versace as she won three awards on the night: Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Push Performance of the Year with her track "Driver's License." The dress itself is fitted down to the knee with a subtle flare out to the hem for an elegant silhouette. It is made of a coral underlay draped in pink tulle over the top, scooped just underneath the top of the gown but not covering the rest as the hem sticks out from underneath. On the back is a diamond-shaped panel left uncovered by the tulle for extra edge. fastened with a zip and highlighting the excess drape featured in this stylish gown.
Saweetie
American rapper Saweetie's track "Best Friend" featuring Doja Cat (who hosted the VMAs this year) won Best Art Direction at the awards and arriving onto the red carpet, dazzled in a silver spaghetti strap Valentino gown. The gown features a V-neck and the back cut down to the waist with the straps arranged in a crossover design. Pleating is the main element of the dress as the rapper is pictured holding the bottom of the dress to the side to really allow the textured pleating to be shown. With a thigh-high split down the side and subtle pleating in the bodice with a thin silver band across the waist, it's a modern piece of red carpet elegance.
Avril Lavigne
Canadian singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne rocked up on the red carpet with a vibrant, edgy look at this year's VMAs, wearing a pink tartan two-piece suit from AREA. It's definitely very modern, with the signature detail a hear-shaped cut-out panel in the centre of the jacket to show the top of the trousers and her embellished crystal top underneath. The heart is outlined in crystals too to link the look so well, including a matching cut-out feature on the back of her trousers outlined in the same embellishment. Tailoring features include peak lapels and padded shoulders with pattern-matching flapped pockets near the bottom, fastened with a low pink fabric covered button. The trousers are a straight leg style falling right down to the floor and covering her platform shoes, the indication of a slight flare which just makes this ensemble even more wow.
Ciara
American singer Ciara was another famous artist in attendance at the VMAs as she opted for a black sheer lace gown from Tom Ford. From her left shoulder to above the waist is a diagonal cut-out section for a subtle hint of an asymmetric silhouette. On the shoulder is a black velvet bow as well as one similar to the bottom of the cut-out design. The long-sleeved gown is a delicate piece with the edges of the lace featuring as the neckline on the gown and a decorative element too. The cuffs of the sleeves are smooth with a scalloped edge of the lace to match the hem of the gown with a short train feature behind for added drama to the singer's striking gown.
Bella Poarch
Social media personality and singer Bella Poarch brought such drama to the red carpet too with her all black lace and satin outfit as her track and video "Build a B***h" was nominated for Best Visual Effects. The fitted bodice included an extra peplum-style section at the bottom to create extra shape, with long lace sleeves and padding in the shoulders delivering a strong shape. The neck appears to be a band collar with extra layers of the lace and embellishment showing from the waist down, leading through to the very long train complete with butterfly embroidery and lace section. Her trousers flare from the knee, again heavily embellished and delivering with a wide hem to simply summarise this haunting nature of an iconic red carpet look.
Paris Hilton
Media personality and singer Paris Hilton glistened in a silver mini dress, heavily embellished in many crystals and paired with matching silver heels. It includes an asymmetric hemline to match the edgy vibes of the dress, styled with high structured power shoulders contrasting the fitting silhouette and a high collar. The different crystals are arranged in a triangular panel from the shoulders down, eventually overlapping and curving round down to the bottom of the dress. The ends of the sleeves are also finished in an asymmetric style to make it cohesive across the sleeve and dress hem and Paris Hilton shining on the red carpet.
Halle Bailey
Actress Halle Bailey was spotted arriving on the VMAs red carpet with her sister Chloe Bailey wearing an elegant white Monot evening gown for the event. It was a halter neck with two cut-out sections either side and the gown, simple in its design, was a fitted piece that draped straight down the floor. Without any sleeves, the dress curved low underneath the arms round to the back and the bottom creating small folds and drapes as the singer moves, further portraying the sophisticated piece and its sleek finish. She accessories with silver jewellery to make this evening gown a rich and stunning piece for the red carpet.
