The Cannes Film Festival - Festival de Cannes - is one of the most prestigious and glamorous red carpet events in the year, seeing many famous faces turn up to attend the premieres of many films shown throughout the duration. Like the majority of red carpet events, it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic; but this year it really has come back with a bang with the fashion that has been worn so far. Between Tuesday 6th July and Saturday 17th July 2021, we've seen many celebrities take to the red carpet at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (there's simply so many to choose from, spoilt for choice!) and at A Hand Tailored Suit, we've selected some of our favourite looks from the gentlemen of the red carpet so far.
Spike Lee
When: 6th July 2021 - "Annette" and the Opening Day of Cannes Red Carpet
Film director Spike Lee has been seen throughout Cannes Film Festival 2021 and on the opening day, he sported a bright fuchsia pink two-piece suit from Louis Vuitton. The jacket is a six-button front with standard peak lapels, rounded shoulders, two flapped pockets with a welt pocket also on the chest, and straight-leg trousers finished with a subtle centre crease. The jacket is made with a single vent on the back, as well as a 4-button cuff arrangement on the sleeves cut slightly shorter than the white shirt to allow subtle exposure of the cuffs. His shirt is fastened fully with no added accessory needed for the collar, as the overall look is great particularly with his matching glasses too.
Adam Driver
When: 6th July 2021 - "Annette" and the Opening Day of Cannes Red Carpet
Actor Adam Driver was also spotted on the opening red carpet wearing a smart Burberry black two-piece tuxedo worn with the classic white shirt and black bow tie to complete the attire. The jacket is a single-button design, made with contrasting peak lapels and the matching fabric-covered buttons on the front and jacket cuffs. The jacket hem has a subtle curved edge as also included are two flapped pockets and the classic welt pocket on the chest. On the collar is the subtle hint of reinforced stitches for extra detail, whilst the matching trousers are a straight leg cut as the hem sits just below the top of his shoes.
Adrien Brody
When: 12th July 2021 - Attending Gentleman's Evening and "The French Dispatch" Red Carpet
Actor Adrien Brody also opted for a black evening piece, wearing a two-piece double-breasted ensemble from Dior. The jacket itself is designed with standard peak lapels which lead into a single-button fastening, a modern style for a double-breasted cut. This allows more attention to be brought towards the thin flapped pockets and welt pocket on the chest, as well as the lovely curved edge of the jacket's hem, leading into the matching black trousers with a sharp centre crease. The trouser hem lies below the shoe with the trousers styled with a bit of a break, as other details include 4-button cuffs on the jacket and a matching black evening shirt with the bow tie to complete the dapper ensemble.
Timothée Chalamet
When: 12th July 2021 - "The French Dispatch" Red Carpet
Actor Timothée Chalamet was also spotted on the same red carpet as he wore a metallic two-piece suit styled with a white shirt. The shirt itself is designed with a band collar and two small buttons which were fastened up for a sleek finish. The jacket is a single-breasted style and features slightly wide peak lapels to balance out the shoulders, 4-button cuffs, two buttons on the front and double jet pockets that work well disguised in the sheen on the suit. The bottom button unfastened leaves the matching waistband of the trousers to be noticed as they are finished with a great sharp centre crease straight to the hem. The length of the trousers finish on the ankle and with the tapered style, makes for an overall smooth appearance on the red carpet.
Tahar Rahim
When: 6th July 2021 - Opening Ceremony Dinner Gala
Actor Tahar Rahim's first look of the 74th Cannes Film Festival was a Louis Vuitton navy dinner jacket, paired with dark navy/black trousers and a crisp white dinner shirt with a covered button placket. With a contrasting black shawl collar, double jet pockets and single button for the fastening, the jacket design provides a two-tone effect to the garment as the pattern is similar to that of ink dye as it disperses. With a curved edge leading into a straight hem that's level with the 4-button jacket cuffs, the trousers are slim and finished with the traditional satin stripe down the side, as commonplace with evening suits and a nice touch strengthened through the pairing of his shiny black shoes.
Nicolas Laury
When: 6th July 2021 - "Annette" and the Opening Day of Cannes Red Carpet
Actor Nicolas Laury kicked off his Cannes Film Festival attire with a white two-piece Lanvin number, worn with a very light pink shirt underneath. The shirt includes a wide spread collar that is sitting on top of the wide pointed collar on the jacket. Small notch lapels act as the base for the shirt opening also, leading into a four-button front and angled hem at the base. From the large patch pockets situated at the bottom of the jacket are embellished flowers blossoming from the opening as other motifs are embellished too to create a couture piece. Including a 4-button cuff arrangement on the sleeves and trousers with a straight cut to the hem sitting below the tops of his shoes - and with the centre crease - it's very much a noticeable, modern suit on the red carpet.
Matthew Postlethwaite
When: 10th July 2021 - "De Son Vivant (Peaceful)" Red Carpet
Actor Matthew Postlethwaite definitely looked sharp in a double-breasted black suit from Versace, finished off with embellishments and gold details. The brocade jacket is finished with a vast array of embellishment to almost lift the pattern in the cloth out, gradually fading down into just showing the pattern itself on the bottom half of the jacket. The peak lapels are well hidden through the embellishment, but doesn't distract from the six gold buttons on the front and the 4-button arrangement on the cuffs. A double vent is added into the back, whilst the front features two flapped pockets with a contrasting satin jet for extra definition. As the slim trousers just sit on top of his shoes, a white shirt and black bow tie are the finishing touches to his dapper look.
Marcelo Vieira
When: 12th July 2021 - "The French Dispatch" Red Carpet
Footballer Marcelo Vieira attended the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival wearing a smart dark purple dinner suit with contrasting black details on the suit. The two-piece ensemble was made even cooler and slightly casual with him wearing trainers, the trouser hem finishing high on the trainers. The actual jacket is a one-button design with black double jet pockets, peak lapels and just a 2-button arrangement on the cuffs. The left lapel is lifted slightly with the contrasting purple buttonhole, a nice subtle detail. With a rounded hem into the straight hem of the jacket, the contrasting black waistband is exposed on the trousers with the subtle centre crease adding extra structure to the formal suit. A white shirt is worn, the cuffs showing underneath the jacket sleeves and finished with a small black bow tie for the finished attire.
