The Oscars 2022: Gentlemen of the Red Carpet

The annual Academy Awards returned for its 94th ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles last night (Sunday 27th March 2022) as the famous Oscars were awarded to those within the world of film. The red carpet was rolled out once more for the ceremony and there's been many suave looks delivered in this award season already; but the Oscars simply added more statement attires, with a few cool tailored ensembles worn by the gentlemen of the red carpet this year.

Actor Simu Liu looked sharp in red on the red carpet as he sported a red Versace two-piece, styled with shiny black loafers and a winged collar dress shirt. The shirt was enriched with gold buttons down the front of the button placket whilst accessorising with a classic black bow tie on the collar and what appears to be a red and gold brace sitting diagonally across the chest. The blazer featured peak lapels and a two-button front to mirror the gold tones throughout the look. The flapped pockets lay flat against the front (as did the welt pocket) whilst on the cuffs were four matching gold buttons too. The shirt cuffs showing though the jacket sleeves brings sophistication to this bold look, made with tapered trousers and the subtle centre crease.

Filmmaker Carlos Lopez Estrada attended the Academy Awards wearing a Thai Nguyen double-breasted suit as the film he directed, "Raya and the Last Dragon" was nominated for Best Animated Feature. The suit was dark green in colour and designed with contrasting black details through the peak lapels, pockets and buttons on the six-button front. Worn underneath was a black formal shirt and bow tie for the accessory, a smart look enhanced through the soft structure of the shoulders and centre crease on his slim trousers.

Keeping it classic on the red carpet was actor Jesse Plemons, who donned an all-black suit and shirt look for his Oscars nomination of Best Supporting Actor in the film, "The Power of the Dog". His jacket was a shawl collar design with a subtle raised texture on the main cloth, fastened with a single button and featuring thin double jet pockets near the bottom. The shoulders sit well and have a soft tailored line across the top as the actor pairs a black covered button placket shirt underneath, finishing with an accompanying black bow tie. The trousers just sit on the tops of his shoes with a slightly looser fit that leads into the tailored hem.

Sebastián Yatra

Singer Sebastián Yatra was also at the Oscars as he would later perform on stage the Oscar-nominated Best Original Song, "Dos Oruguitas" from the animation "Encanto". His red carpet suit was a talking point, wearing a baby pink three-piece Moschino ensemble. It included a peak lapel double-breasted tailcoat with a sharp angled hem. The buttons were covered in the same fabric as the lapels, also matching the four on the front of the single-breasted waistcoat, that itself featuring a low-scooped neckline and jet pockets. The trouser waistband can just be seen made in the same satin/silk material, outlining the matte finish of the slim trousers that finish just on the shoe. The accompanying dress shirt was pleated with a covered button placket for a smooth look and the wing collar standing for the bow tie.

Actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh was a winner on the night, taking home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the film, "Belfast". For the event, he donned a three-piece navy blue tuxedo with black satin peak lapels and a contrasting two-button front. Two double jet pockets also featured in the jacket, along with four-button cuffs and an angled welt pocket that was accessorised with a white pocket square. This linked nicely to his white pleated dress shirt with a classic collar to hold the bow tie in position. The shoulders were slightly rounded for a bit more elevation, whilst his waistcoat was kept smooth with no lapels on the V-neck and a single-breasted front. His trousers were slim and finished just on the shoe with a subtle break in the calf.

Bill Murray

Actor Bill Murray's Oscars red carpet attire consisted of a dark charcoal grey three-piece suit with peak lapels on the blazer. Fastened with a one-button front, the classic tailored details of welt and flapped pockets also were featured in the piece, along with three-button cuffs to finish. His trousers were cut straight and with the centre crease for a sharp finish, the hem just finishing on or above the shoes. Underneath, he wore a low-cut waistcoat and white shirt with an additional black collar-shaped piece underneath the main shirt collar. To complete the ensemble, the actor dons a navy and white polka dot evening scarf around his neck for a subtle pop of colour.

Daniel Kaluuya

Actor Daniel Kaluuya walked the red carpet to attend the 94th Academy Awards wearing a bright blue/turquoise Gucci double-breasted evening blazer, pairing the piece with black trousers and black shirt. It included a six-button front with the jacket cuffs finished five buttons, all covered in the same fabric as the jacket itself. The contrasting peak lapels and wide, balancing out the shoulders which have a soft tailored line. The hem of the jacket is sharp and straight, with the trouser centre crease continuing this effect down to the hem. With two flapped and a welt pocket sitting just behind the one lapel, the black shirt is fastened fully with no tie to complete the look, nor is it needed for an effortlessly cool finish.

Kodi Smit-McPhee

"The Power of the Dog" star Kodi Smit-McPhee was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film and on the red carpet, wore a double-breasted pastel blue Bottega Veneta suit with a matching shirt. The actor accessorised with a silver necklace underneath the classic collar as a pop of sparkle in the monochrome attire. The jacket featured wide notch lapels and a four-button front, finishing with single jet pockets on the waist for an extra long appearance in the body. The cuffs include a three-button design (with two only fastened) and the trousers are skinny with a subtle slit at the hem as they sit over his blue boots. The centre crease is strong and the blazer hem crisp for a refined red carpet outfit.
