New York Fashion Week S/S22: The Fashion Roundup - A Hand Tailored Suit

New York Fashion Week S/S22: The Fashion Roundup

It's that time of year again. Fashion Week returned and the fast-paced fashion season continued to showcase new, innovative fashion designers alongside those very much established in the industry for many years. To kick off what was a busy busy fashion month was New York Fashion Week. Between 8th September and 12th September 2021, many fashion brands and designers took to the runway, showcasing their designs ready for Spring/Summer 2022 and of course, we at A Hand Tailored Suit couldn't help but notice some great tailoring elements - and what was a great way to kick-start the fashion month ready for London, Milan and Paris. Here are just a few pieces we loved:

Spring/Summer 2022 Ready-To-Wear

This collection featured a gorgeous range of pieces perfect for wearing during an evening out in the Spring/Summer, full of summery colours like red, yellow orange and pink, but also some very chic pieces included like this model's attire. The sleeves are so striking, the peak lapels wide and smoothly curved added to the certain statement this look gives. Such a modern take on the classic tuxedo too with a cropped jacket, one-button fastening, pleated trousers from the waist and a satin cummerbund too on these tapered trousers.

This matching skirt and jacket set is a very sophisticated look with the baby pink working so well with the gathering and extra padding on the shoulders, along with rounded notch lapels and collar for a softer finish. The jacket is short in length with a double-breasted front, six buttons all matching the main cloth of the look and the skirt designed with a subtle A-line shape.

The sophistication continues with these four looks the models wore as they walked down the runway, the first being a sleeveless coat dress with a statement circular buckle in the centre of the waist and an eight-button double breasted front. Let's also note the power of styling a white blouse with a pair of high-waisted black tuxedo trousers (the sleeves very much emphasising the power this outfit brings too) and the power of a pair of black wide-leg shorts cropped not far above the knee styled with an oversized bow blouse. Of course, check patterns in tailoring are always so popular and when combined with high shoulders and statement sleeves, it's a winning combination.

Tailoring all around in this collection, from double-breasted suits to the classic pinstripe, contrasting collar/cuff shirts and velvet jackets, there's enough to be spoilt for choice for the dapper wearer next season.

Giving the waistcoat the spotlight it deserves with these refined choices, from a yellow multi-coloured check in a double-breasted cut and scooped neckline to a classic Prince Of Wales check and grey style, there's plenty of options that goes with these. Note the variety in pocket styles and neckline between the three all with something in common: each looks dapper.

Pinstripes continue to be as strong as ever when it comes to selecting a design for a business suit - or just a suit the wearer chooses to wear many times in the week. It's a classic design in the suiting world, and these three looks just showcase the variety one pattern can easily have. How strong they look in a double-breasted/peak lapels partnership, the three flapped pockets and the accessorising of the gold watch chain certainly stating the pinstripe means business. Let's not forget the impact of a well-tailored coat either as the models below wear.

Spring/Summer 2022 Ready-To-Wear

This whole collection showcased a strong range of tailoring but with beautiful choices of fabric and design highlighting the artistic beauty, the coat above being a great example. The model wears a long black coat fastened to the side for a wrap design with flapped pockets, the shoulders padded fitted and the shoulders rounded for extra height, albeit not to take away from the brilliant detailing of the floral print that runs from the shoulder down to the bottom. It's a coat that tells a story.

Don't let the occasional humid weather in Spring/Summer put you off from wearing your beloved coat for the season: instead, wear it over the shoulders and serve a statement style. The models show how a trench or double-breasted coat can be styled very well in both ways, particularly the first style really delivering in impact with the tailored straight-leg trousers and fitted shirt.

Of course, never forget the effortless effect of a matching two-piece suit. The first is actually a white jumpsuit with a black button in the centre for the fastening at the ends of the notch lapels. Over the shoulders is what appears to be a separate cropped jacket or an element that is involved within the jumpsuit, but made to give that illusion. The shoulders are structured to ensure this piece delivers in its significance, whilst the ivory number is very much relaxed with its wide peak lapels and oversized fit with extra tie details on the blouse.

The primary colour wheel of blue, red and yellow was most definitely on show in this collection but wow, did it pop in some eye-catching looks like these. Each one includes different tones of the same colour in the outfit, most noticeable in the first blue outfit featuring three different shades. The yellow coat with peak lapels and matching trousers is softened through the lemon roll neck top underneath, whilst the all-red ensemble is truly a defining piece with the peak lapels standing away from the coat and that gold buckled red belt - you may remember Former First Lady Michelle Obama wearing such a style in purple during President Joe Biden's inauguration at the start of the year.

Monochrome styling is strong, but a bold pattern delivers just as strong an impact too. The model above wears a peak lapel jacket cinched in at the waist with a chunky black belt, creating a more fitted silhouette to the attire. Flapped pockets are hidden within the bold pattern and the sharp shouderline enhancing this wow-factor piece. The pencil skirt is knee-length, combining a classy fit with a bold print for a stand-out outfit choice.

Bringing sunshine to Spring//Summer with this yellow number as the model sports a double-breasted piece with a six-button front and flapped pockets cut on a slight anle. The hemline is straight and the peak lapels sharp, almost aligned on a straight line to highlight the boxy fit on the shoulders. The welt pocket is also included in the design of the jacket, classic elements of tailoring that are shown to be strong simply through the colour of the piece.

Spring/Summer 2022 Ready-To-Wear

The collection shone and glistened down the catwalk, full of metallic looks and rich ensembles as this model wears a very shimmery two-piece black suit with a subtle grey/blue undertone. This will certainly dazzle those during an evening event as the piece is made with wide peak lapels and a contrasting black collar to match the shirt underneath. Flapped pockets are also included with a two-button front and fitted in at the waist. The shoulders are padded and the trousers slim with a turned up hem and centre creases only allowing the natural folds of the cloth to convey the shimmer so much more.

Velvet has just as much natural shimmer to for a evening choice, or even during the day in a pink attire or blue of the same cut and fit. Both are customised with satin edges down the sides of the peak lapels and collars, not forgetting the side stripe on the knee-length trousers. The jackets are oversized for that ever-so-casual approach to this tailored look, the jackets unfastened to show the tied powder blue shirts with a standard collar. Evening wear just got casual.

Now this is a trench coat that will go perfectly with an evening ensemble thanks to its rich shimmer on this midnight blue - or of course paired with the matching trousers with a sharp centre front and turned up hem. The coat includes the signature trench coat elements: sleeve belts, shoulder epaulettes, wide notch lapels and a double-breasted front. Styled with it open and hands tucked in the pockets like the model above definitely ensures the cool and sleek styling of a trench coat will certainly never go out of style and forever remain a staple season piece.
