The Gentlemen of the 2021 Met Gala: Who Wore What - A Hand Tailored Suit

The Gentlemen of the 2021 Met Gala: Who Wore What

The The Met Gala - also formally known as the Costume Institute Gala or the Met Ball - is one of the most prestigious fashion events in the calendar year. On the 13th September 2021, four months after its usual scheduled date in May, it returned with some stunning outfits. The theme this year was the first of a two-part exhibition occurring now and in 2022. Whilst the theme for next year's Met Gala is "In America: The Anthology of Fashion", this year's was titled "In America: The Lexicon of Fashion", celebrating the American fashion scene and its designers, along with reflecting upon events that happened during the pandemic. With so many outfits that took to the spotlight, let's take a look at some of the most sharp-looking gentlemen's attire from the night.

American actor Timothée Chalamet (and co-chair of this year's Met Gala) channelled smart/casual for sure as he wore a Haider Ackermann ensemble. Styled with white trainers and tucked into his socks, the white sweats formed the very casual part of the outfit, a draped matching waistband at the top accessorised with silver embellished brooches. The jacket forms the tailored, smart element to the attire as the cropped jacket is cut in a double-breasted form, styled with a four-button front and 4-button cuffs. Double jet pockets and the standard welt are also included, but the detail to note most is the peak lapel folded up and standing upright to show the black panel underneath. The collar is also black with the element of a black high neck showing underneath to complete the top. White stitching is used as another contrast detail around the lapel edge and buttonhole whilst the soft shoulder line shows a more relaxed approach.

Another actor channelling white at the event was Kit Harrington as she sported a classic tuxedo look from Yves Saint Laurent. The white jacket is also a four-button front double-breasted piece, designed with the classic peak lapels and padded shoulders for a sharp look. On the jacket are two flapped pockets and the welt on the chest, a 4-button cuff maintaining the classic element. The trousers are also classic, opting for a pair of black tuxedo trousers with the satin side stripe and a black bow tie to complete. His white shirt features a classic collar and covered button placket for a smooth finish to the suit.

British Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton sported a custom Kenneth Nicholson attire featuring a two-piece black suit worn over a knee-length lace white shirt gown finished with appliqué. The left side is cut longer so to drape out from underneath the suit jacket whilst the classic collar is designed with embellishment too and the centre button placket a strong detail. The jacket itself is a single-breasted cut with a two-button front with a short stance and wide rounded notch lapels for a softer touch. On the sleeves are 4-button cuffs and the angled flapped pockets are placed low. The trousers are slim with a subtle centre crease showing on the front and then hem sitting over the tops of his shoes. With a lapel pin accessorised in his left lapel, it's a sophisticated piece.

Dev Hynes

English singer Dev Hynes looked effortlessly cool in his two-piece Louis Vuitton number at this year's gala. The brown suit is finished with thin red pinstripes and styled with a striped white shirt and matching tie too, made in the same cloth for an extra cool touch. On the jacket are peak lapels and pattern-matched pockets, the garment being a double-breasted cut with a six-button front, two badges acting as button substitutes. The shirt cuffs show through the ends of the jacket sleeves which is another great detail and the singer's trousers slim with a small element of a flared shape to the hem. The hem sits above the shoe and as he poses with one hand tucked into the flapped pocket, it's effortless.

FINNEAS

From his green velvet number at the VMAs not long before, to this all-red ensemble at the Met Gala, singer/songwriter FINNEAS opted for a Givenchy look with matching red boots too. Underneath the suit jacket was a loose short-sleeved red shirt, designed with a classic collar positioned over his gold jewelled neck piece and buckled straps following underneath the arms round. Focusing on the jacket itself, it is shaped in a double-breasted form with a unique gold buckle fastening it in place. Notch lapels are the chosen style with rounded shoulders and single jet pockets being noticed on this unique suit. The shape of the jacket is boxy and his trousers slim with a break near the bottom as it sits over the boots, finishing with a red sequined face covering.

Simu Liu

Canadian actor Simu Liu looked dashing in an evening number too from Fendi, consisting of a white tailored jacket, black trousers and white shirt for the event. Both the jacket and shirt are similar in design as they include contrasting piping around the edges of the collars, jacket front and button stand on the shirt. The black button on the shirt's collar acts as a focus point, whilst the jacket cuffs finished in the same black piping are completed with a 2-button cuff. The collar is long, causing the rounded peak lapels to sit low on the chest of this four-button jacket. Two flapped pockets are positioned near the bottom of this double-breasted piece and the trousers a slim cut with side pockets for a clean finish.

Cordae

American rapper and singer Cordae was spotted also in attendance this year with his girlfriend Naomi Osaka (also a co-chair this year wearing Louis Vuitton). The choice of attire for the singer was a dapper choice featuring a camel trench coat from Coach, styled with a crisp white shirt underneath and smart formal trousers. The shirt is tucked into the black pleated cummerbund of the trousers featuring side pockets and sharp centre creases, the hem just brushing the top of his shoes. The trench coat is smooth with its double-breasted form and wide notch lapels as the collar is printed in the brand's logo. Sleeve belts are also included and fastened with black buttons whilst his left lapel includes a buttonhole. The accessories to make this look even dapper are the black tie (tucked into the waistband), gold brooch and black sunglasses.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Canadian basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rocked up in a stylish patterned jacquard jacket and blush pink trousers from Tom Ford. The jacket's design includes wide peak lapels and padded shoulders leading down to the buttons on the cuffs, matching the trousers. The jacket is a metallic silver grey in colour and styled with a ribbed dark grey high neck knit for a great contrast. It's a two-button front with the first button sitting on the waist, elongating his form more. Including two flapped pockets and a rounded hem, the trousers are fitted with a sharp centre crease down the front as the hem sits over the boots, completing his smart attire.

Adam Mosseri

Businessman and head of Instagram Adam Mosseri was one of the members of the honorary chair and his suit didn't disappoint. The BODE ensemble was a double-breasted attire, printed with strong orange geometric details for a retro edge to the piece. The diamond shapes are also formed through sharp black lines which the black bow tie picks up, along with the black dress studs on his evening shirt and buttons on the cuffs. The shapes can also be spotted on the back of the jacket too and his sleeves, whilst the jacket front features the classic features of the welt pocket and large flapped pockets with a round edge, contrasting the sharp prints. As well as peak lapels and the sharp centre creases on the trousers, it's one of the stand-out looks from the night.

David Byrne

A more relaxed approach in its powder blue colour, singer/songwriter David Byrne attended in a denim-looking suit cut in a double-breasted form. Made more casual through the choice of footwear too, the focal details of the jacket are the contrasting white collar and six-button front with sharp peak lapels. His shirt is one made with a classic collar and covered button placket down the centre with the sleeves long enough to slightly show through the jacket sleeves. Thin double jet pockets are also included on the jacket, whilst the singer is pictured styling the welt pocket with and without a patterned pocket square with gold detailing for a subtle touch. With the trousers falling straight down to create folds at the hem, it's a cool balance of formal wear with casual styling.
