The Ladies of the 2021 Met Gala: Who Wore What

The Ladies of the 2021 Met Gala: Who Wore What

The The Met Gala - also formally known as the Costume Institute Gala or the Met Ball - is one of the most prestigious fashion events in the calendar year. On the 13th September 2021, four months after its usual scheduled date in May, it returned with some stunning outfits. The theme this year was the first of a two-part exhibition occurring now and in 2022. Whilst the theme for next year's Met Gala is "In America: The Anthology of Fashion", this year's was titled "In America: The Lexicon of Fashion", celebrating the American fashion scene and its designers, along with reflecting upon events that happened during the pandemic. With so many outfits that took to the spotlight, let's take a look at some of the most defining ladies' looks from the night.

Singer Billie Eilish truly delivered a wow-factor moment on the infamous Met Gala stairs, wearing a blush pink Oscar de la Renta gown. Its long train draped along behind her as she walked and it only emphasised the captivating, old Hollywood glamour of the dress further. One of the co-chairs of the Met Gala this year, the singer's dress consisted of a tulle-fitted corset bodice with off-shoulder sleeves delicately draping round round her arms and back to contrast the boned bodice structure. The skirt flared out like a ballgown, the tulle looking like it was floating on the stairs and an overall dream gown that will be remembered as one of the most iconic Met Gala outfits for a while.

Amanda Gorman

American poet Amanda Gorman's Met Gala look was certainly one inspired by the theme, as the Vera Wang dress was inspired by the Statue of Liberty. Also co-chair of the event this year, her strapless gown was ultramarine in colour, embellished with thousands of crystals and a train also included for that iconic stairs moment. The gown has a sweetheart neckline as the tulle piece features a silk band round the waist, a side slit on the draped skirt and features gorgeous pleated details on the bodice front and on the side of the skirt. The back of the bodice includes a subtle cut-out design for that modern feel, a wonderful fashion moment for this year's gala.

Regina King

American actress and director Regina King combined power with glamour as she stepped onto the Met Gala carpet wearing a pinstripe Michael Kors ensemble, lined in glistening gold sequins. The blue pinstripe gown is another strapless piece, designed with a centre slit at the bottom and eight matching blue buttons aligned in the centre too. Either side are flapped pockets for a strong tailoring feel and the floor-length dress is layered with a matching blue pinstripe evening coat over the top. It's draped over the shoulders as it includes wide peak lapels and two buttons on the front. The shoulders are padded for extra structure which conveys its strong shape through its styling and with the pinstripes finished in gold too, it's certainly powerful.

Megan Rapinoe

American soccer player Megan Rapinoe also made a statement in her two-piece red suit from Sergio Hudson. Styled with a star-patterned blue blouse worn open collar with white buttons, the jacket is a shawl collar design with a single-button fastening. The shawl collar falls straight down to an abrupt curve at the bottom, whilst the hem of the jacket is cut sharp. The shoulders are structured with the common features of a welt pocket and flapped pockets also included, the cuffs finished with a 6-button arrangement. Her trousers sit high on the waist for an extra strong look to the suit, the silhouette of the trousers cut straight and falling right down to the floor to cover her shoes - definitely a statement suit and look.

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson wore a glamorous red fishtail dress from AZ Factory to the Met Gala this year, styled with a dramatic matching red shawl designed with a long train too. The dress includes a gold zip fastening on the back and shoulders gathered at the seam for extra height. With a square V-neck on the front, the different composition of the knitted piece can be noticed and contrasts the smooth texture of the bottom of the gown. The fishtail also is also long at the back to drape on the infamous stairs of the museum and further conveying the glamour a red dress can carry at such an event.

Iman

Fashion model and actress Iman delivered one of the most eye-catching looks of the night as she wore a custom Harris Reed ensemble with a matching headpiece collaborated on with Vivienne Lake. A golden goddess of the night, Iman's outfit consisted out a strapless gold jacquard bodice with the back obscured by the large feathered headpiece. Her matching trousers are gold jacquard print too, cut with a flared hem for extra shape whilst the gold crinoline worn on top delivered in power and excitement of a Met Gala piece. Each section of the crinoline was layered further with the matching feathers and gold leaf to create what is a shimmering and no doubt, historical masterpiece.

Emily Blunt

British actress Emily Blunt dazzled in a Miu Miu sheer tulle and white silk dress, designed as a tribute to the vintage Hollywood scene. The tulle dress is fitted at the bodice before falling straight down to the floor for an angelic piece. The gown features a wide array of embellishment and embroidery too which glistens under the spotlight, just like her starry headpiece and the embellished neck on the gown. The white silk drapes across the front round to the back whilst the same silk is made into a floor-length cape at the back. With fringing also included at the bottom of the gown, the old glamour is conveyed spectacularly.

Kehlani

Singer/songwriter Kehlani's suit was such a modern, edgy ensemble from Aliétte as she turned up to the Met Gala wearing an all-silver embellished piece. The trousers sit high on the waist and the style of leg cut straight with the hem brushing the floor. A zip fastening and a thick waistband finish this piece and the jacket is cropped with just the single button for the fastening. The lapels are short and in the peak style to balance the very padded shoulders with a point. Draping round from the front to the back, over the arms, are thick straps also embellished in the matching silver crystals. The jacket cuffs are left open as the overall piece is so very sharp.

Lupita Nyong

Wearing custom Versace was actress Lupita Nyong, as her floor-length gown was made from denim and included subtle additions of embellishment too. Strapless and fitted on the bodice, the neckline is asymmetric to indicate the various denim panels curved to convey the elegant silhouette. On the neckline is an inserted crystal panel with a thicker edge to capture the glamour of the night. On her left side is where the denim panels flare out to create a peplum, featured over an additional skirt underneath that is designed with a side split and crystal embellishments too. Looking at the bottom of the dress, an additional gathered section of denim is seen on the right, again embellished in matching crystals near the seam and scattered as the fabric flares out to create a train element to this well-structured piece.

Yara Shahidi

Actress Yara Shahidi channelled vintage Hollywood glamour also in a beautiful strapless Dior gown, attached with a gold tulle hooded cloak on the back which the actress wore on the famous stairs. The cloak itself draped elegantly behind her whilst the main gown itself was finished with a heavy array of embellishment and embroidery to emphasise its inspiration. Across the waist was an added accessory of a rose gold belt to match the gloves also completed with embroidery at the top. A small train draped behind her on the gown, its gold hue blending well into the light gold tulle train. With a matching silver headpiece and necklace, the actress poses with her hands tucked into two diagonal pockets on the front of the gown for a modern touch in this sophisticated gown.
