The SAG Awards 2021: The Best Dressed Ladies - A Hand Tailored Suit

The SAG Awards 2021: The Best Dressed Ladies

On 4th April 2021, the Screen Actors Guide Awards (or SAG) was a little different this year as the ceremony was pre-recorded before showing on our screens. The awards are handed out by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) to the winning nominees, celebrating their outstanding performances in film and prime-time television. Despite the different format, just like the award season so far, celebrities didn't shy away from dressing up to celebrate, and we at A Hand Tailored Suit have spotted some gorgeous pieces. Here are some of the best dressed ladies from the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Catherine O'Hara

Actress Catherine O'Hara was a double winner on the night, as she took home awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for her role in the TV series, 'Schitt's Creek' - and she certainly looked a winner wearing custom Thom Browne. Her ensemble consisted of a matching sequined tailored black jacket and skirt, paired with a white tuxedo shirt and a silk button-down corset, a very strong and clever take on the tuxedo attire. The jacket itself was designed with sequined notch lapels, flapped pockets and a folded white pocket square added for extra accessory to the dazzling piece. With the bow tie as the final touch, the actress had a fantastic night as she looked fantastic too.

Glenn Close

A nominee for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her role in the film 'Hillbilly Elegy, actress Glenn Close looked stunning in an Oscar de la Renta pleated chiffon caftan. This simple monochrome piece looked effortless on her as the natural drape of chiffon created lovely movement. The pleating falls from the neck collar right down to the hem of the caftan, whilst the sleeves are loose-fitting on the arms before gathered into the cuff: a perfect outfit for capturing the glamour of the night whilst attending from her own home.

Mindy Kaling

One of the ceremony's awards presenters on the night, actress Mindy Kaling looked amazing as she wore an electric blue Alex Perry cape gown. The floor length design included a low square neckline and ruching in the centre, twisted to add an extra element to this one-colour dress. The angled padded shoulders allow the fabric to drape down effortlessly as part of the cape feature and in all, create a stand-out, glamorous moment for the actress during this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Viola Davis

Actress Viola Davis was the winning recipient of the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture for her role in 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' and on the night, wore a custom silk green gown designed by Louis Vuitton. The sleeveless gown was created with padded shoulders, a V-shape neckline on the panelled top and an invisible zip fastening on the back. Zips are added to the skirt which are unfastened either side of the centre to create a split skirt feature, with the same zip design also outlining the detailed embroidery panels. The silver embroidered gems are repeated patterns either side of the gown, creating a stunning dress that Viola Davis shone in.

Maria Bakalova

Nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm', actress Maria Bakalova delivered elegance and drama in a Dior floor-length embellished gown. The dress with sleeves included a black and sheer check pattern that ran the entire way through, increasing in size from the collar down to the train. With a plain black waistband panel added, a red rose was sewn onto it as the flowers were embellished onto the bottom of the dress to add a bit of colour. The collar designed with pearls and a gold rose in the centre was a great way of conveying the delicate nature of this tulle dress, and a gorgeous look too.

 Nicola Coughlan

'Bridgerton' actress Nicola Coughlan was nominated along with the rest of the show's cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and on the night, her Christian Siriano gown delivered one of the best looks of the night. The black gothic style lace and tulle dress was designed with a long hemline that flowed behind her for an elegant twist as pictured above. The tulle layered on the hem and on the bottom of the cape detail really added extra shape, complimenting the delicate but soft nature of the lace used. With a mini black dress included underneath the sheer material, Nicola Coughlan's gown was no doubt one full of sophistication and drama indeed.

Jurnee Smollett

As part of the cast of 'Lovecraft Country' who were nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, actress Jurnee Smollett wore a stunning fuchsia pink ballgown from designer Zuhair Murad. Constructed from silk taffeta, the gown includes a deep off-shoulder neckline which falls into the pleated high waistband. From the waistband, the silk taffeta drapes down into a long train at the back of the dress, whilst the taffeta is puffed up and gathered at the front to create extra drama and a shorter hem. Pleating is also visible on the top as the draping qualities are truly shown, and Jurnee Smollett truly embraced the ceremonious glamour.

Kerry Washington

For her role in the series 'Little Fires Everywhere', actress Kerry Washington was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie and for the night, wore a rich, royal blue velvet Etro dress with the matching headpiece. The ensemble delivers a 1920's vibe as the velvet is heavily embroidered in circular patterns using Swarovski crystals that from afar, makes the dress look like it is multiple shades of blue. It has a V-neck on the front with a low-cut back and a thigh-high split to reveal the royal blue velvet as it is. It's a modern take on a vintage, glamorous form that Kerry Washington really did look glamorous in.
