The BAFTAs 2021: The Best Dressed Gentlemen - A Hand Tailored Suit

The BAFTAs 2021: The Best Dressed Gentlemen

The 74th British Academy Film Awards (also known as the BAFTAs) occurred over the weekend of 10th/11th April 2021, taking place at the Royal Albert Hall in London. A charity which supports and develops the moving image in the form of film, television and video games, this weekend was full of films and celebrities being awarded in their individual categories and for their performances. As has been the norm for award seasons so far, some celebrities virtually attended the ceremony and some were present at the venue with social distancing in place; yet wherever the celebrities were, the glamour was all the more present! We at A Hand Tailored Suit have already picked out our best dressed ladies, now it's time to look at some of the best dressed gentlemen.

Nick Jonas

Attending the ceremony with his wife Priyanka Chopra, singer/songwriter Nick Jonas dressed in a classic black velvet Giorgio Armani tuxedo at this year's BAFTA awards. The double-breasted jacket was finished with contrasting satin details on the peak lapels and buttons, leaving the one button unfastened. Thin jet pockets can be seen in the jacket, along with the classic breast pocket in which he styled without a pocket square. The accompanying velvet trousers included front pockets which he can be seen using on the red carpet and with the white dress shirt and black bow tie, Nick Jonas showed why you can't beat the classic black dinner suit for such an occasion.

Tom Hiddleston

Attending the BAFTAs as an award presenter, actor Tom Hiddleston also portrayed class in a black double-breasted Ralph Lauren tuxedo with a white dress shirt and black satin bow tie. The jacket itself consisted of a four-button fastening and shawl collar with the bottom almost level to the thin jet pockets on either side. The soft shoulder line combined with the subtle creases at the front of the trousers works together to create another example of the classic evening attire. The white pocket square is a finishing touch to the sharp look in which Tom Hiddleston looks ever so cool in.

Actor Richard E. Grant was also in attendance to present an award at the BAFTAs this year, and his evening attire was a classic three-piece black suit, white dress shirt and the all-important black satin bow tie. The actor's jacket was a single-breasted, one-button design with a thin shawl lapel and slanted flapped pockets. The single-breasted waistcoat was fully fastened to reveal the sharp angled hemline and neckline, designed with no lapels. The tall form of the actor is emphasised through the waistcoat hemline being exposed, leading into the sharp front creases of the trousers. It was another great example of great tailoring and a suit which Richard E.Grant indeed looked the part.

Daniel Kaluuya

Winner of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in 'Judas and the Black Messiah', actor Daniel Kaluuya wore a very sharp Alexander McQueen two-piece ivory suit. The jacket gives the illusion that the actor is wearing a waistcoat underneath, where it is in fact a double layer design with peak lapels, slanted flapped pockets and matching fabric buttons. The trousers had the statement detail of the black stripe down the side like a pair of evening trousers can be traditionally designed with. The wide stripe then falls forward at the hem as the trousers include a split at the bottom, elevating the sharp tailoring more and making the creases more prominent. We've already covered a couple of Daniel Kaluuya's tailored looks, and this one is another to add to the memorable list.

 Leslie Odom Jr.

Actor Leslie Odom Jr. was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in 'One Night in Miami' and on the night, he added to his list of amazing tailored looks with two different looks from Versace. His first was a printed two-piece red suit with a yellow shirt worn open collar, styled with the matching print roll neck and brown V-neck knit. The jacket itself was a single-breasted design with a three-button fastening, flapped pockets, small notch lapels and black buttons on the cuffs. The pattern is Versace's signature print, and this tailored outfit definitely became a signature look for the event.

His second Versace look was just as much of a statement, wearing a bright blue tailored suit over a red and blue checked roll neck jumper as he performed 'One Night in Miami'. The red trench coat is the perfect finishing garment to pick out the red in the knit, as the jacket with wide notch lapels and single black buttons on the cuff completes another vibrant and very sharp suiting attire for the actor.

Paul Raci

For his role in 'Sound of Metal', actor Paul Raci was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as he sported a bold yet sophisticated red three-piece Dolce & Gabbana suit with a blue shirt and matching red tie. The jacket was a two-button fastening with metallic buttons on the front, cuffs and also on the waistcoat. With notch lapels and flapped pockets emphasising the cool nature of the suit, the red was broken up with a double gold chain fastened to the shirt's collar, along with the shirt's cuffs slightly on show. The trousers included the sharp crease detail that makes the suit ever more sharp, and Paul Raci is definitely one of the best dressed at this year's BAFTAs.

Barry Keoghan

Dressed in Gucci for this year's awards, actor Barry Keoghan was up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in 'Calm with Horses'.The two-piece cornflower blue suit was worn with a striped white and blue shirt and a cropped purple crew neck knit layered over the shirt. The classic suit details of flapped pockets and notch lapels add to the cool, casual vibe of this suit, with the front creases on the trousers the finishing touch. The choice of light wooden buttons works perfectly with the pastel shade of blue, with the five-buttons overlapping on the cuffs, adding an element of softness to the actor's suit. It's a cool, effortless ensemble from Barry Keoghan at this year's BAFTAs.

Riz Ahmed

Wearing a two-piece navy Prada suit, actor Riz Ahmed was nominated for two BAFTAs: Outstanding British Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role for the films 'Mogul Mowgli' and 'Sound of Metal' respectively. The suit featured sharp notch lapels and large patch pockets as the actor wore it unfastened to reveal more of the geometric roll neck jumper underneath. Below the breast pocket is the triangle seen on some of Prada's other products, a subtle nod to the designer of the suit. The straight leg trousers do not have creases at the front to keep the soft properties of the wool suit in place, and with the hemline just above the ankle, Riz Ahmed's ensemble is a fresh look for sure.
